FCC PREPARED TO ALLOW MURDOCH TO KEEP FOX TV

Federal regulators are expected to offer media mogul Rupert Murdoch a deal today that he can't refuse - he can keep his Fox Television empire intact, but he must show them it's in the public interest.

Murdoch will be given a choice, FCC officials said Wednesday, of either reducing the 99 percent equity stake in Fox held by his Australia-based News Corp., or demonstrating that preserving the company's existing ownership structure serves the public.

If Murdoch can make a compelling public-interest case, he would be eligible to receive a waiver from a statutory foreign ownership restriction, said the FCC officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
