Sheriff Reed Kelly said fire crews responded to a house in Daleville about 6:30 p.m. In the charred remains of the house, crews found what they believe is the body of Earnest Wade Huffman Sr.
The 68-year-old was frail and apparently could not reach the front door, Kelly said.
The man's son, Earnest Huffman Jr., escaped the fire but suffered severe burns to the upper half of his body. He was flown to the University of Virginia burn unit, where he was listed in critical condition late Wednesday.
Kelly said the cause of the fire was being investigated, but he did not think it was suspicious.
The elder Huffman leaves two other sons, a daughter and a wife who was not home at the time of the fire.
