Highland conference
RADFORD - Writing and culture of Appalachia is the focus of the 18th annual Highland Summer Conference at Radford University June 19-30, sponsored by the university's Appalachian Regional Studies Center and the English Department.
Anndrena Belcher, a storyteller, actress and writer from Scott County, will lead the first week. She is a frequent leader of workshops in creative writing, dance, music, traditional games, oral history and folklore. Belcher also will give a public performance Thursday, June 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Heth Student Center.
Jim Wayne Miller, a poet, novelist and essayist who teaches German at Western Kentucky University, will lead the second week. Miller is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Zoe Kincaid Brockman Memorial Award for Poetry and the Appalachian Writers Association Book of the Year Award. He will present a public reading on Thursday, June 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Heth Student Center.
