MOTHER AND DAUGHTER DIE IN W.VA. WRECK

A mother and daughter from Wythe County were killed Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle collision near an Interstate 77 exit at Bluefield.

Killed were Betty Coe, 48, of Austinville and her daughter, Cindy Coe Wheeler, 28, of Wytheville, the driver.

Betty Smith, 50, of Wytheville, a passenger in the Wheeler car, was in stable condition Friday at Bluefield Regional Hospital. A child in a car seat was not seriously injured.

The Wheeler car collided with a car driven by Betty Hagerman, 47, of Grundy. Hagerman was in stable condition Friday at a Princeton, W.Va., hospital.

The collision occurred at the intersection of U.S. 52 and U.S. 460.

Police found no skid marks at the scene and were looking into the possibility that a traffic light malfunctioned.
