BLACKSBURG MAN FACES CHARGES AFTER FRIDAY MORNING CHASE

A Blacksburg man faces several charges of traffic and narcotics violations after a high-speed chase Friday morning, town police said.

The pursuit started at about 10:20 a.m. after a pickup truck - pursued by a Blacksburg officer for speeding in a 25 mph zone - failed to stop.

Vehicles reached speeds up to 80 mph before the pursuit ended 5 1/2 miles away when the driver pulled over and surrendered on Den Hill Road, police said.

Police charged Bryan Christopher Belay, 22, a Blacksburg native with no permanent address, with driving 41 mph in a 25 mph zone, attempting to elude police and driving on a revoked operator's license.

Belay also faces charges of possession of marijuana, possession of a concealed weapon and two counts of possessing controlled substances. A two-foot sword, marijuana, psychedelic mushrooms and LSD were found in a search of the truck, according to police.

Police impounded the truck after discovering Belay's operator's license had been revoked because of a conviction of driving under the influence.

Belay was taken to the Montgomery County Jail, where he was being held in lieu of $10,000 bond.
