Mayhew (13-2) struck out 10 batters and has 148 strikeouts this season, topping the mark of 145 established by Scott Kramer of Emory in 1994. Kramer set the record in 982/3 innings; Mayhew has pitched 1191/3.
Mayhew joins former Ferrum pitcher Billy Wagner, who holds the Division III record for strikeouts per nine innings, as a record holder.
Todd Cunningham and Chad France each had two hits for 15th-ranked Ferrum, which raised its record to 32-10 in a game with NCAA Tournament implications. Mary Washington, which has dropped from the rankings, fell to 21-12.

Jimmy Williams, the teacher/professional at Cox's Golf Range in Blacksburg, shot a 2-under par 70 and tied for second place in the Hermitage Country Club Pro-Am in Richmond and won $650. Quentin Gray shot a 5-under 67 to win the tournament.
University of Virginia women's tennis players Alison Cohen and Jen Fiers have been selected to participate in the 1995 NCAA Division I Women's Championships to be held May 17-21 at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif.
Cohen, a junior who leads the Cavaliers with a 24-11 record, will compete in the individual singles championships. Cohen is ranked 60th in the nation and recently was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference team. Cohen and Fiers will team up to compete in the doubles portion of the tournament. They are the UVa's top doubles team with a 24-8 record and are ranked 24th nationally.
Virginia Commonwealth University, host of the men's Division I NCAA basketball tournament East Region first and second rounds in 1996, will hold a public lottery for tickets beginning May 9.
Tickets to the event, which will be held March 15 and 17 at the Richmond Coliseum, are $75 for all three sessions. A lottery application is available by calling the VCU Athletic Ticket Office at (804) 828-7267, or by writing at: VCU Ticket Office, 819 West Franklin Street, Richmond, Va., 23284-2003. Each person may request a maximum of four tickets, and only one application will be provided per person. Lottery winners will be chosen and notified by mail beginning on Sept.9. Tickets will be mailed in late February 1996.
