FAST CATCH GIVES ARTHUR TOURNEY LEAD

Fallon Arthur of Roanoke didn't wait long to grab the crappie-category lead in the Cave Spring Optimist Club fishing tournament Friday at Smith Mountain Lake.

The three-day tournament began 7:30 a.m., and at 8:01 a.m., Arthur was weighing a citation-size crappie that weighed 2 pounds, 3 ounces. He reported hooking the fish on a minnow while fishing the Blackwater River arm of the lake.

Second in the crappie category is Samuel Brown of Rocky Mount, who entered a 2.26-pound fish.

Leading the catfish category, with a 16.90-pounder, is Jimmy Stover of Rocky Mount. Stover hooked his fish on a Rapala lure while fishing the Indian Point area. Second in the catfish race is Malcolm Johnson of Union Hall, whose fish weighed 14.20 pounds.

The best largemouth is a 5.90-pound catch by Randy Whittington of King, N.C., and the top smallmouth is a 3.72-pounder by Alfred Gunter of Lynchburg.

The contest, which attracted 728 fishermen, continues through noon Sunday.
