BRIEFLY PUT

RADIO TALK-show host (and ex-Watergate burglar) G. Gordon Liddy says the liberal-left media have misstated his view.

Liddy says he has never advocated shooting federal agents indiscriminately - only when they burst in on you "unannounced," with guns drawn. Because feds wear bulletproof vests, Liddy told his national audience of some 8 million listeners: "I advise shooting them in the head."

At his home studio in Fairfax last week, Liddy was given the opportunity to withdraw this tip. Instead, he revised it. Because most people can't aim well enough to hit a fed's head, Liddy said: "Shoot twice to the body - center of gravity. If that does not work, shoot to the groin area."

There. We set the record straight.

TREND ALERT: Numbers of mature adults enrolling in colleges and universities have been going up gradually; expect them to rise dramatically in the future. This week we noticed a little news item about a senior-citizen-only university that plans to open for business in Lorrach, Germany, this fall.

Courses will include not just personal-fulfillment stuff, but opportunities to supplement professional skills. This makes sense: Five years from now, one in four Germans will be 60 or older. The much-discussed lifelong learning is gradually becoming reality, and not only in Germany. It's a good thing, for everyone who can and does take advantage of it.
