VAUGHN SEEKS CIRCUIT COURT CLERK NOMINATION|

Zelda S. Vaughn, Radford's chief deputy clerk of Circuit Court, has announced she'll seek the Democratic nomination to succeed her boss and fellow Democrat J.D. Harman.

Harman, 67, announced last month he won't seek another eight-year term. He's served as clerk of the Circuit Court since 1984, following stints in two local law offices.

Vaughn, 47, who has worked in the clerk's office since 1975, ran against Harman when he first was elected. Harman has pledged to support her candidacy.

Vaughn cites her 20 years experience in the clerk's office as her primary qualification for the job, which she said "takes a working clerk" to do. "It keeps you busy," she said. The position pays just over $60,000 a year.

The clerk's duties primarily involve managing and archiving court system paperwork and other legal records, including real estate transactions. The office also issues marriage licenses. Vaughn said she enjoys the variety. "No two days are alike," she said.

She also said she enjoys dealing with people and wants to "carry on the efficient, courteous service that people have come to expect."

Vaughn, secretary of the Radford Democratic Committee, is a Radford native and graduate of Radford High School. She's studied banking at New River Community College. She and her husband, William, have a son and a daughter, both teen-agers.

Vaughn is the second woman to announce for the clerk's job. Wanda Humphrey, 50, a legal assistant and office manager for a law firm, is seeking the Republican nomination. Humphrey faces GOP opposition from former city official and businessman R. Coleman Brittle and city police Officer Todd Jones.

Both parties will pick their respective candidates at mass meetings in the next few weeks.
