TECH RUNNERS SWEEP FIELD AT VA. WESTERN

Runners from the Virginia Tech cross country team swept the top three places in the 14th annual Virginia Western 5,000-meter Run on Saturday.

Tom Lankowicz of Blacksburg was first with a time of 15:10.14. Former Cave Spring standout John Hawthorne came in second in 15:13.56, and Marshall Ferguson was third in 15:45.01.

Lori Taylor, a former All-American runner from Virginia Tech, won the women's division in a time of 18:36.04. Suzanne Nagle of Blacksburg finished second in 22:24.26, and Lisa Rudd of Salem was third in 23:31.35.

Wayne Howell set a course record in the Masters Division, finishing with a time of 17:34.78, and Rebecca Kinser won the Women's Masters Division in 26:10.46.

In other sports news in the region:

Renae Rose set a Roanoke school record in the triple jump at the George Mason Spring Invitational track meet in Fairfax. Rose jumped 10.41 meters.

In the men's competition, Courtney Fitch finished fourth in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 8 inches.
