Roger Koltz's ``Cowboy Chili'' took first place after a panel of chili ``experts'' and volunteers spent nearly an hour and a half downing entries. Koltz, of Burke, will travel to Reno, Nev., and compete in the World Cook-Off as Virginia's representative.
Mary Beth Monroe, co-chairwoman of the event from Virginia Friends of Chili, said it was great to have a Virginian win and be the state's representative.
``Last year the winner was from Ohio,'' she said.
Ted Ditillo won the people's choice award, voted on by the taste-testing public, which Monroe said numbered somewhere between 30,000-40,000 people. The award, and ``The Best Use of Beef'' award, which also went to Koltz, are sponsored by the Virginia Cattlewomen.
Other winners in the chili category were: Kitt Hoff, second; Bill Sheriff, third; Dottie Lorenz, fourth; Sergei Kowalchik, fifth; Myra Sherriff, sixth; Harry Lynch, seventh; Jim Hedrick, eighth; Gloria Pleasants, ninth; and David Moore, tenth.
Showmanship winners were: Sandra Saunders, first; John Bonfiglio, second; Ditillo, third; Jim Patsel, fourth; and Lawrence Taylor, fifth. Winners of the booth category were Taylor, first; Saunders, second; Tim Brock, third; Patsel, fourth; and Bonfiglio, fifth.
