Hunt for Mugsey continues

Sue Collins still hasn't given up hope.

Even though she lost her dog Mugsey almost a year ago, she continues her search for him.

She has spent thousands of dollars on newspaper advertisements and laminated signs with Mugsey's picture.

She's offering a reward of $1,000.

The Franklin County woman says she still gets several calls a week from people who believe they've seen her dog.

Mugsey is a 17-pound mixed breed with short, stubby legs and big, pointed ears. He's 11 years old and looks like a cross between a collie and a dachshund.

"A lot of people see shelties and think they're Mugsey," she said.

Collins even tracked a tip into North Carolina recently -at least to a family that had once lived in North Carolina.

"They were nice about the whole thing," she said. "But when I saw their dog, I knew it wasn't Mugsey."

Anyone with information about Mugsey should call (703) 483-2553.

Montgomery: Not one of a kind

On the third floor of the Montgomery County Courthouse, it's known only as the infamous "Visitors from Ireland" incident.

It also could be called the "Never Trust an Intern" imbroglio.

At the end of March, County Administrator Betty Thomas told the Board of Supervisors that Montgomery had been chosen as one of two counties a group of city managers from Ireland would be visiting May 11. Specifically, the group - sponsored by the Washington, D.C.-based International City/County Management Association - was interested in seeing the county's recycling program.

Late last month, the board learned the visit had been canceled.

The letter of apology Thomas received April 21 tells the tale: "The intern originally responsible for arranging the visit is new to the Washington metropolitan area and has never handled this type of project before. I had requested that a visit be set up with Montgomery County (Maryland), as their offices are just a few miles north of the D.C. area. Our intern contacted you in Virginia instead, receiving highly enthusiastic support from your offices. However, our intern did not realize that Montgomery County, Virginia, was such a far distance from Washington, D.C."

To add insult to injury, the apology included a misspelled last name for Thomas' assistant, called the Board of Supervisors the "Board of Directors," and addressed the letter to ``Betty Davis.''

But the letter from ICMA Assistant Director Molly McKay ends thoughtfully, "If you are ever in need of any assistance or information from ICMA relating to municipal management, I hope you will please contact me.''

Buch going back

Pierre Buch, the Moneta resident who has led numerous veterans groups to Europe to visit the sites of their former battles, this month is taking a group of 3rd Division veterans who fought in the Alsace-Lorraine campaign.

Buch, who was born in Bennwihr, a small town in that French region, said this will probably be his last trip.On Saturday, the veterans will help dedicate a monument to American veterans at a French military cemetery at Sigolsheim.
