Museum needs help

The Virginia Museum of Transportation needs help building a cover for the retired J611 steam engine.

The locomotive is being housed in a protected building on Norfolk Southern property while the museum constructs a permanent cover for it.

In November 1994, Roanoke citizens approved a bond referendum which included $810,000 to build a cover for the museum's railyard. The museum must make a 100 percent match of this money to receive these funds.

The targeted completion date of the cover is June, with dedication ceremonies and relocation of the J611 to the museum set for June 11. All donors will be recognized at that time.

Donors who give $250-$499 will be recognized with a brick inscribed with their name in the museum's Brick Courtyard. For gifts of $500 or more, the donor's name will be on an honorary J611 plaque at the entrance of the museum.

``The Grand Lady Returns,'' a painting by Roanoke artist Eric Fitzpatrick depicting both the J611 and the Hotel Roanoke, is available as a limited edition lithograph for $35 plus $3.95 tax and shipping. Fitzpatrick has donated a portion of the sale of the art work to the Transportation Museum.

For ordering information, call 342-5670.

Donations for the J611 cover may be mailed to the museum at 303 Norfolk Ave., Roanoke Va. 24016.
