RETAILER D. CAUDILL DIES AT 74

Dale Caudill, who worked his way up through the ranks of S.H. Heironimus to become the store chain's president for almost 10 years, died Monday. He was 74.

Caudill began his career with Heironimus in 1947, after serving four years as an Air Force captain in World War II.

His son, Bob Caudill of Salem, said his father began in Heironimus' accounting department and quickly ``got retailing in his blood.''

During the 35 years he worked for the department store, Caudill worked as an office manager, controller, treasurer, secretary, vice president and executive vice president. In 1973, the locally owned chain elected him president.

A native of Troutville, Caudill graduated from Jefferson High School in Roanoke. He earned an accounting degree from Virginia Tech in 1942. Twenty years later, he was elected Tech Alumni Association president.

When he retired in 1982, Caudill was the only person to have served as president of all three of Roanoke's top business organizations: Roanoke Merchants Association, Better Business Bureau, and Downtown Roanoke Inc.

Bob Caudill said his father was dedicated to the same community involvement as was his company. Heironimus was involved with the Miss Virginia pageant for years. Caudill served on the boards of various organizations, including the YMCA, Roanoke Symphony and the Roanoke Chamber of Commerce.

After retiring at 62, Caudill played golf, traveled to Europe and China, and visited with his four grandchildren, his son said.
