NURSING HOME WEEK TO BE OBSERVED IN PULASKI

Pulaski Healthcare Center and Pulaski Retirement Community observe National Nursing Home week with the second annual COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR Wednesday, May 17, 1-6 p.m., at the center, 2401 Lee Highway. Del. Tommy Baker, R-Pulaski County, is scheduled to speak. Pulaski Community Hospital and Radford Community Hospital are among those participating. Eagle Country 107 WPSK (107.1 FM) broadcasts live from the fair.

It's all free, and drawings will be held for several door prizes. All are welcome.

The Pulaski Senior Center offers free transportation for area seniors. Call Tina Faiszt, 980-1000.

SENIOR GATHERINGS

The News and Views discussion group meets Thursday, 9:30-11 a.m., Blacksburg Community Center, 725 Patrick Henry Drive, with Bob Kreamalmeyer. The topic is tax abuse. Refreshments.

The American Association of Retired Persons Blacksburg chapter meets Tuesday, 11 a.m., at the Blacksburg Community Center, 725 Patrick Henry Drive.

The American Association of Retired Persons Radford chapter holds its monthly potluck supper May 17, 5 p.m., at the Radford Senior Center, 27 First St. All people age 50 and older are welcome. 731-3634.

May 18, 2 p.m., Hawaii is the focus of the last in a series of travel programs for seniors offered by Mel Mayfield at Richfield Retirement Community, Salem. The program is in the Shenandoah Room at Richfield's Knollwood Apartments, 3615 W. Main St. 380-4900. Refreshments follow.

Today, 10:30-11:30 a.m., Heritage Home Health Care conducts a free blood-pressure screening.

Friday, travel to Shatley Springs-Ashe County, N.C. Transportation for seniors is $4 and leaves the National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets, at 8:30 a.m. Travelers visit the frescoes in Glendale Springs after lunch.

The Senior Athletes of Montgomery County sell Mother's Day corsages Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., in front of Wal-Mart, The Marketplace, Christiansburg. (Mother's Day is Sunday.)

A free back-pain screening is Tuesday, 10:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m., at the center with licensed physical therapist Dave Davis. Registration is required.

The AARP ``55 Alive'' refresher class for mature drivers is Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. both days, National Guard Armory. $8. Registration is required.

RETIRED AND SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM, 1 Franklin St., Courthouse Annex, Christiansburg. Victoria Scott, 382-5775:

Tuesday, 10 a.m., the McCoy and Warm Hearth groups visit SHARE, then have lunch.

The center still needs rummage items for its sale Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. both days. Proceeds benefit center activities. Volunteers to help with the sale also are needed. (Setup for the sale is Thursday, 10 a.m.)

Creative writing class meets Wednesdays, 10 a.m., and is open to all.

The center is selling $1 chances on a bow tie quilt by the Radford Senior Center quilting group. Proceeds help the center's improvement fund. The drawing is next Wednesday, May 17.

May 19, travel to Mabry Mill, Blue Ridge Parkway. Transportation is $2 and leaves the center at 9:15 a.m. Lunch is on your own at the Mabry Mill Restaurant.

The Bible study group meets Mondays, 9:30-10:30 a.m. Coffee and muffins served.

The nutrition program is Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Sign up by Friday for the picnic trip to the cascades next Wednesday, May 17. Free transportation departs the center at 11:30 a.m. and returns at 3:30 p.m. Participants should pack a lunch. Beverages will be provided. Postponed in case of rain.

Movie day is May 22, noon. The movie is "Quiz Show." A modest donation is requested to defray expenses.

Senior Poetry Contest: New River Community College has announced its 17th annual poetry contest for people age 60 and older. To be eligible, poems must be original, shorter than 60 lines, and never before published. Participants may submit up to three poems. The entry deadline is July 31.
