STAFF WRITER MIKE HUDSON WINS AWARD

Mike Hudson, a Roanoke Times & World-News staff writer, is one of five winners of the eighth annual Journalism Awards for Excellence in Personal Finance Reporting sponsored by the American University School of Communication and the Education Foundation of the Investment Company Institute.

Hudson, 33, won the $2,500 award for newspapers with circulation of less than 300,000. There were 151 entries, the most since the awards program began in 1988.

Hudson was cited for a series of articles published in December about the problems and pitfalls low-income consumers face in obtaining home mortages and personal loans. His reporting on the subject also has appeared in The Washington Post, The New York Times and Southern Exposure magazine.

Computer-assisted reporting editor Jim Ellison, former staff writer Lon Wagner and staff artists Rob Lunsford and Andrew Svec contributed to the series.

Hudson, a general assignment reporter, has been a staff writer with the Roanoke newspaper since 1985.
