Wheeler announced Tuesday that she will not seek another term as commissioner of revenue. After serving 20 years as commissioner and 12 as a deputy, she said it was time to retire.
``I just want to spend some time at home and hopefully do some traveling,'' Wheeler explained.
Two of her deputies, Anne C. Chambers and Mark H. Butts, announced their intentions to run for the position. Because her employees will be campaigning for her job, Wheeler said she will remain neutral during the election.
With 20 years of experience as a deputy commissioner, Chambers said, ``If elected I will be a commissioner that works for the people and with the people.''
She said she planned no major changes, but would explore new ways to perform the job better.
A native of Narrows, Chambers, 39, has served four terms as chairperson of the Marketing and Education Committee of Celco Federal Credit Union. She is a board member of the American Heart Association for Giles, as well as past vice president of the board of directors for the Governmental Employees of Giles Federal Credit Union.
The mother of two, Chambers resides in Narrows with her husband, Barry.
Butts, 41, also a Giles native, has worked with Wheeler for 17 years. ``I feel like I know the job very well and I'd like to see the office continue to move forward,'' Butts said .
Like Chambers, Butts said he planned no major changes if elected.
A 1971 graduate of New River Community College with a degree in business management, Butts has taken additional course work in assessment and digitized mapping. He has also attended seminars on state and federal taxes.
Butts is a member of the Virginia Association of Assessing Officers, the Narrows Lions Club and the New River Valley Regional Disabilities Board.
He lives in Pearisburg.
