TECH'S CUSTIS SET TO TRY OUT FOR U.S. TEAM

Virginia Tech's Ace Custis was one of 42 college players selected Tuesday to attend trials for the U.S. team that will compete at the 1995 World University Games.

The trials will be held June 9-11 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., and the World Games are Aug.24-Sept.2 in Fukuoka, Japan.

Custis, a rising junior forward, averaged 15.8 points and 10.5 rebounds for a Tech team that won the National Invitation Tournament and finished 25-10. (List of invitees in Scoreboard. B4)

Florida coach Lon Kruger will be the head coach for the U.S. team. Former Radford University and current Dayton coach Oliver Purnell will serve as one of Kruger's assistants.

Salem's Carolina League baseball game with Winston-Salem on Tuesday night was suspended after one inning because of rain.

The Warthogs and Avalanche will complete the nine-inning game at 6 p.m. today, with a seven-inning game to follow. Winston-Salem led 2-0 after one inning Tuesday.

Virginia's Dom Starsia was named ACC Coach of the Year in men's lacrosse for the first time after guiding the Cavaliers to a first-place regular-season finish and a No. 2 ranking in the coaches' poll.

The 11-member All-ACC team, chosen by the league's head coaches, includes four players from Duke, three each from Maryland and Virginia and one from North Carolina.

Duke's Matt Ogelsby , a three-time All-ACC selection, was the unanimous choice for ACC Player of the Year after leading the Blue Devils to their first conference tournament title. Entering the NCAA Tournament, the senior midfielder has 31 goals and 15 assists. Other Duke players on the all-conference team are Ross Moscatelli, Scott Harrison and Tyler Hardy.

ACC scoring leader Doug Knight is joined by Michael Watson and David Jones to make up the Virginia contingent on the All-ACC team.

Two-time All-ACC midfielder Kip Fulks heads the list of Terrapins on the ACC's all-star squad. He is joined by Dan Radebaugh and Brian Dougherty. The other first-team choice is North Carolina's Steve Schreiber, a senior defender.

Maryland's Andrew Whipple was selected ACC Rookie of the Year. Through the regular season, the attackman from Rochester, N.Y., has 22 goals and 19 assists.

The Washington and Lee women's tennis team rolled to an 8-1 victory over Skidmore (N.Y.) in the NCAA Division III championships at Sweet Briar College.

The Generals (19-1) advanced to a second-round meeting with Amherst, a 6-3 winner over Sewanee at 8:30 a.m. today behind a sweep in doubles and five singles victories. The biggest victory for W&L was at first singles, where sixth-ranked Marilyn Baker defeated third-ranked Jamie Levine 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

Kelly Dampeer, a former Northside High School standout, tied the Radford University single-season record for RBI with his 57th as the Highlanders defeated Coastal Carolina 10-6 in a Big South Conference baseball game in Conway, S.C.

Dampeer matched the mark set in 1993 by Duane Filchner, who had two RBI on Tuesday for Radford (28-22 overall, 15-6 conference). Coastal Carolina is 16-36, 5-16.

Ferrum College pitcher Jimmy Hamilton is one of 37 players who have been invited to the USA Baseball team's spring training camp, which opens June 7 in Millington, Tenn.

Hamilton, a sophomore, is 8-4 this year with two saves and a 3.53 ERA. He has given up 80 hits, struck out 105 and walked 53 in 991/3 innings for the Panthers. The USA Baseball staff will choose 26 players from a total of 40 invitees to play a 36-game, 15-city tour in preparation for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Phil Leftwich, a pitcher for the California Angels, will be the special guest at the Radford University Athletic Association Tip-Off Luncheon on May 19.

Leftwich, the first former Highlanders player to reach the major leagues, will help open the association's annual fund drive at noon in the Muse Hall banquet room on the Radford campus. The luncheon is free for current Radford Athletic Association members and is $5 for guests. For information, call 831-5108.

Forward Ian Spooner, the Big South Conference's player of the year, was named MVP at the recent Radford University men's soccer awards banquet. Other award winners for the Highlanders were: goalie Chris Barrett, coaches award; and defender Rick Lodge, most improved.
