DEATHS RULED HOMICIDE-SUICIDE

Salem police completed their investigation Tuesday into the deaths of an elderly couple in West Salem.

Autopsies confirmed what police suspected - that Harold and Gloria Campbell died from gunshot wounds suffered Monday morning. Gloria Campbell was shot in the neck, and Harold Campbell was shot in the head.

Police believe that Harold Campbell, 72, shot Gloria Campbell, 70, then turned the handgun on himself. Harold Campbell had been the primary caregiver for his wife, who had been paralyzed for about four years.

The Campbells were found Monday morning after a family friend, who routinely checks on the couple, discovered them dead in the kitchen of their Fletcher Street home.

The Campbells' son spoke with them at 7 a.m. The murder-suicide occurred between then and 9 a.m., said Lt. Stacey Clark.

"As far as I'm concerned, the investigation is complete," Clark said.
