ALEXANDER MAKES NBA PLANS OFFICIAL

Cory Alexander, whose basketball career at Virginia was disrupted by foot injuries, officially has applied for early entry to the NBA draft.

The 6-foot-1 point guard played only 11 minutes as a junior during the Cavaliers' 1993-94 opener before he broke his right foot. He did not play the rest of that season and was redshirted, but he broke the same foot again during his fourth season at Virginia.

Mike Colley, UVa's assistant sports information director, said Alexander filed the paperwork Monday with the NBA.

Colley said Alexander's decision was no surprise to the Cavaliers' coaching staff.

``He said at our media day back in October that he was going to go pro, and he reiterated it the day he got injured,'' Colley said.

As a sophomore in 1992-93, Alexander averaged a team-high 18.8 points and 4.6 assists. He was voted to the All-ACC second team and was a first-team All-ACC tournament selection.

Alexander's injury against Connecticut in the `93-94 opener, ended a streak of 65 starts and started a streak of bad luck.

He was averaging 17.5 points and 5.7 assists per game and UVa was ranked No.17 in the Associated Press poll when he broke the foot again 11 minutes into a game with North Carolina State on Feb. 8.
