CATHERINE M. WELLS, a member of the human resources and administration departments of Liberty Mutual Insurance Co., has earned certification from the Human Resource Certification Institute, which is affiliated with the Society for Human Resource Management.

W.R. "BILL" BESS of Bill Bess Logging has received the Virginia Forestry Association's Logger Merit Award for harvest and management excellence.

Adherence to Virginia's Best Management Practices, harvest planning, utilization, safety, maintenance and appearance of equipment, and state and federal regulation compliance are some aspects reviewed for the award.

BLUE RIDGE PUBLIC TELEVISION has received a $1,000 grant from The Foundation for Roanoke Valley to help fund its ``Medical Update'' series.

The weekly series, aired Wednesday evenings with Drs. Robert Allen and Hugh Craft of Carilion Health System as hosts, is produced in cooperation with the Children's Hospital at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley and The Children's Miracle Network.

The doctors team up with other professionals to provide information and guidance to parents and caregivers.

ALLSTATE INSURANCE has announced the names of its 1994 Honor Ring winners in the Roanoke and New River valleys.

The agents and their years of service are as follows: Anita Williams, 24; Jane Clower, 23; Ron Bingham, 22; Steve Nash, 16; John Beasley, 15; Roger Rakes, 15; Larry Fallen, 14; Joyce McElwaine, 13; Larry Mattox, 10; and Deborah Nash, 6.

Ring winners are individuals with all-around superior performance in sales and customer service. In addition to being ring winners, Williams and Fallen were recognized as 1994 National Conference winners.

LESLIE JEAN CARTER, formerly of Roanoke, has been named coordinator of corporate relations at Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C.

Prior to joining the advancement team at the college in 1993, Carter was an admissions/marketing coordinator for Three Springs of North Carolina Residential Treatment Center for adolescents in Chatham County, N.C.

Carter, a graduate of Elon College, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William P. Carter Jr. of Roanoke.

ANGELA B. PEERY, formerly of Salem, was first runner-up as Teacher of the Year in Horry County, S.C. Peery was selected from the more than 1,500 teachers in the county. She teaches English at North Myrtle Beach High School and is the daughter of Gail M. and Daniel W. Bushnell of Salem.

AVIS CONSTRUCTION COMPANY INC. of Roanoke has received the Million-Dollar Sales and High Performance Builder awards from Butler Manufacturing for pre-engineered steel purchased from Butler during fiscal year 1994.

Last year Avis carried a 40 percent market share of its trade area.

THE ROANOKE REGIONAL HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATIONS INC. recently announced the names of Roanoke-area businesses that were winners at the Better Living Expo '95 - THE HOME SHOW.

The winners are: Alpine Sewing Machine Company, Blue Stone Block Masonry Company, Closet Storage Organizers of S.W. Virginia, Cundiff Heating & Air Conditioning, Environmental Directions Inc., Kitchen Distributors of the South Inc., Lee Hartman & Sons Inc., Roanoke Awning & Window, Roanoke Gas Company, Surfaces Inc., Timer Truss Housing Systems Inc. and Wholesale Enterprises Inc.

WANDA BEARD and CHARLES R. SHRADER of Roanoke, sales associates of Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield, have received "SAMMY" awards for outstanding sales performance in 1994.

Beard was named sales leader in the distribution of individual and Medicare supplemental policies for Trigon.

Shrader was recognized for leading Trigon's Western Region Sales Team to top region in the company's regional business unit.

APRIL DAWN LYLE of Salem has received a Child Development Associate Credential in recognition of outstanding work with young children. The credential was awarded by the Council for Early Childhood Professional Recognition in Washington, D.C., which represents the early childhood profession.

Lyle works at the Sunshine Station Day Care Center.

CHRISTINE P. POWELL was named 1995 Woman of the Year for the Longwood Chapter of the American Business Women's Association. Powell has been a member of ABWA for two years and is newsletter editor.

Powell, a 1983 graduate of Virginia Tech, is the marketing coordinator for the Roanoke Civic Center.

S.L.M. DISTRIBUTORS INC. recently received recognition from The Majestic Company as one of its outstanding distributors.

Thirty-seven Majestic distributors in 21 states and Canada, including S.L.M., received the Majestic Outstanding Distributor Award in recognition of strong sales performance in their local markets.

S.L.M. distributes factory-built fireplaces.

ERIC B. HOUSMAN, a private banking officer for Signet Bank, has achieved official designation as a licensed certified financial planner. Eric is manager of the Salem branch and has been with Signet since 1992.

FIRST VIRGINIA BANK SOUTHWEST recently presented $1,300 to the Easter Seal Society's Roanoke chapter on behalf of children who participated in the eight valleywide Easter-egg hunts held April 1. The bank sponsored the events in cooperation with the Roanoke Department of Parks and Recreation, Roanoke County Parks and Recreation and Q-99 FM/WSLC AM.

GOOD SAMARITAN HOSPICE, a community-based, nonprofit organization that provides care for terminally ill individuals in the Roanoke Valley, won the Leadership and Achievement Award from the Virginia Association for Hospices Inc.

The hospice's public service announcement, ``Taking Care of Mom,'' focused on strategic planning ideas designed to promote community awareness of hospice services. Nancy Harvey, director of community relations, was honored for outstanding achievements in the category.

The hospice also recently received grants from two local organizations. It received a Community Opportunity Grant toward the purchase of audio-visual equipment for use in patient education and training of staff and volunteers from The Junior League of Roanoke Valley Inc.

The Lutheran Brotherhood Southwest Virginia Branch 8264 contributed matching funds toward upgrading office equipment.

BECKY STALLARD of Rollins Hudig Hall in Roanoke has earned the title of certified professional service representative in the insurance field.

The designation is awarded by The Professional Insurance Agents Association of Virginia and the District of Columbia.

JOHN C. BRAKE of Brake Agency in Vinton has been named to Kansas City Life Insurance Company's 1995 President's Club.

J. DANIEL PACE Jr. of Signet Financial Services in Roanoke was recently named to the Kemper Executive Council, an organization for financial representatives selling Kemper mutual funds and annuity products. Council members are recognized "for the superior customer service and financial expertise they provide to their clients."

RADFORD UNIVERSITY has established an office for its continuing education program on the campus of Virginia Western Community College. Brenda Brinkley will provide information and support to students currently enrolled in upper division courses offered at the Roanoke location.

JERRY L. DUNNAVANT, senior sales representative for the Lawyers Title Insurance Corporation's Roanoke office, was named a charter member of the 1994 Sales Achievers Club.
