SONNY W. HAVENS, son of Larry T. and Ernestina A. Havens of Vinton, has been promoted to the rank of airman first class at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas.

Havens, an aerospace physiology apprentice, is a 1993 graduate of William Byrd High School.

FIRST LT. MICHAEL A. MAYES, son of Billie J. Reid of Salem, was recently promoted to his current rank while serving at the Yokota Air Force Base in Tokyo. Mayes is a 1988 graduate of Northside High School and a 1992 graduate of Virginia Tech.

SGT. LEWIS A. TIPPIE, son of Delbert E. Tippie of Salem and Helen G. Tippie of Roanoke, arrived for duty at Fort Benning, Ga. Tippie is a 1985 graduate of James River High School.

PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS AVERY W. CRAIN, son of Cliff C. and Christine R. Crain of Buchanan, returned recently from a six-month overseas deployment that included duty off the coast near Bosnia-Herzegovina while serving aboard the USS Nassau.

Crain is a 1986 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

AIRMAN 1ST CLASS BRIAN N. CHITTUM, son of Janice M. Chittum of Roanoke, has graduated from basic training at Kelly Air Force Base in Texas.

Chittum is a 1992 graduate of William Fleming High School.
