Event raises money for MDA

A Vinton man won top fund-raising honors in the 1995 Vinton "Lock-Up" to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

David Allen, of Black Sheep Auto Service, raised $720. Mitchell Bowman and his students at Herman L. Horn Elementary school came in second, raising $664. The third-place fund-raiser was Frances Houghtaling of Fran's Auto, who raised $633.

The event, hosted by the Vinton War Memorial, raised $9,306 for the MDA patient service program.

Storytelling festival to be held in June

The first Blue Ridge Storytelling festival is scheduled for June 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Green Hill Park.

The festival, sponsored by the Roanoke County Parks and Recreation Department, will feature local and student storytellers, as well as four professionals. Admission is $4.

Doc McConnell of Rogersville, Tenn., will present his "Old Time Medicine Show," and David Masengill of New York, will combine storytelling with folk music. Kathy Pierce of Phillipsburg, N.J., will tell literary and original stories and Gwynn Ramsey of Lynchburg, will spin tall tales.

The festival also will include a craft show and food will be available.

School raises money for MDA

Children at Country Bear Day School in Roanoke have raised $1,315.00 to help "Jerry's Kids." Children hopped for two minutes to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Southwest and Central Virginia.

The MDA Hop-a-thon teaches children about the importance of helping others and to not be afraid of people with disabilities.

All proceeds from the event will be used to sponsor monthly clinics, summer camps and other patient services for local MDA families.

Help for sufferers of schizophrenia

The Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley is offering a new support group, Coping with Schizophrenia.

The group will meet at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month in the association's office at the Jefferson Center, 541 Luck Ave., suite 314.

VWCC registering for summer session

Virginia Western Community College has started registration for summer session classes that begin on May 16.

Tuition is $46.65 per credit hour for Virginia residents and $156 for out-of-state students plus a $2 college service fee for each student.

Students may register for classes and pay tuition by calling 857-7543. Complete instructions are given in the Summer Schedule of Classes available in the admissions office.

Students may also register in the admissions office Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m., and Fridays, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. During the first week of classes, hours will be extended to 6:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Letter carriers collect food for needy

Local letter carriers will collect non-perishable food items left near neighborhood mailboxes Friday as part of the fourth annual Letter Carrier Food Drive. All food collected will be delivered to the Southwestern Food Bank.

The drive, a cooperative effort of the U.S. Postal Service, The United Way, and the AFL-CIO, brought in million of pounds of food last year for community food banks across the country.

To participate, leave non-perishable items by mailboxes early enough to catch the local letter carrier.

Fraternal Council honors police officers

The Knights of Columbus, Roanoke Council 562, honored five police officers at its Distinguished Public Service Awards banquet April 24.

Those honored were: Lt. Steven O. Wills, Roanoke City Police; Det. Debbie L. Hogan, Roanoke County Police; Officer Michael F. Farrell, Salem Police Department; Lt. William F. Brown Jr., Vinton Police Department; and Lt. C. Lee Bradley, Virginia State Police, Salem Division.

The officers, selected by each department, were recognized for their dedication and service to Roanoke Valley communities.

Girl Scout Council elects officers

The Virginia Skyline Girl Scout Council recently held elections in Harrisonburg for the 1995-97 term.

Roanoke residents named to offices are Elizabeth Niles and Connie Smith, members-at-large; Stacy Colvin, council nominating committee; and Paula Katz, Senior Girl Scout member.

The group also recognized Judy Moore, leader of Senior Girl Scout Troop No. 799, with a service honor pin.

Cave Spring Baptist Church and Oak Grove Church of the Brethren received Council Plaque awards for longtime service to Girl Scouting.

Red Cross chapter recognizes volunteers

The Roanoke Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross and Appalachian Regional Blood Services recently honored their corps of volunteers and presented special citations at a volunteer recognition luncheon.

Citation recipients are Bill Graham, Karen Miller, Ann Godsey, Del Kirschner and Lee Baker.

Those receiving certificates of appreciation were Anthony Reed, Shirley Layman, Brenda Williams, Susan Adcock, Harriette Mullens, Julie Keith, Jim Buriak, Ken McCauley, Becky Buchanan, Al McCain, Connie Barker, Bob Searles, Dolores Searles, Ed Stier, Ann Cranwell, Jim Browning, Jake Jacobs, Howard Wilson, Lynn Pearson and Gloria Weckstein.

The groups also recognized four organizations for their support with the Good Neighbor Award: Multi-Lodge/Blue Ridge Community Services, First Baptist Church and the Roanoke City and Roanoke County health departments.
