KEN WOODS, safety coordinator for Sybron Chemicals Inc. in Salem, has been named Syborn's nationwide employee of the month. Woods was chosen because of his work in averting a major price increase in the disposal of used drums. Woods, who has been with Sybron Chemicals Inc. for nearly two years, will receive a monetary award, as well as a personalized plaque and a company watch.

EFFIE M. MOORE, owner of Plant Culture Inc., recently achieved certification as an interior landscape professional by the Associated Landscape Contractors of America.

Moore is one of only three Virginians who have achieved this designation. Moore, who opened her interior landscape contracting business in 1984, is a graduate of Virginia Tech with a bachelor of science degree in horticulture.

MARY McMANAWAY MASON, a Northside High School graduate, recently was elected to the Colorado Chapter of the American Institute of Architects' 1995 board of directors. Mason, the daughter Mary and James McManaway, is an associate with R.N.J. Designs in Denver. She graduated from the School of Architecture at Virgina Tech.

THE ROANOKE SCHOOL BOARD recently received a certificate of excellence from the Association of School Business Officials International for the system's financial reporting.

This is the highest form of recognition in school financial reporting.

The program is voluntary and was created to foster excellence in preparing and issuing school system financial reports. A Certificate of Excellence is awarded to those school systems who have voluntarily submitted their system's comprehensive annual financial report for review by an ASBO Panel of Review.

RADFORD UNIVERSITY has established an office for its continuing education program on the campus of Virginia Western Community College. Brenda Brinkley will provide information and support to students currently enrolled in upper division courses offered at the Roanoke location.

GAIL GODSEY, a distributor with Safeguard Business Systems Inc. in Roanoke, earned membership in Safeguard's 1995 President's Club.

Membership in the club is awarded to only a select number of the company's top sales achievers. Godsey has been a distributor for 25 years and is on the board of directors of the Blue Ridge Regional/National Association of Women Business Owners and a member of the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce.

DREW HARMON and MARIE NEUHOFF WEBB, members of Carilion Health System's Internal Audit Department, earned Certified Internal Auditor status when they passed the CIA Examination sponsored by the Institute of Internal Auditors. Only 445 out of 2,289 candidates from around the world passed the exam and became certified.

INTERIM PERSONNEL of Roanoke, a licensed office of Interim Services Inc., has received a certificate of appreciation from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The certificate was presented to Interim for "morally and financially supporting our national civil rights and humanitarian endeavors."

LESLIE JEAN CARTER, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. William P. Carter of Roanoke, has been named coordinator of corporate relations at Guilford College. Carter will work as liaison between the college and area companies, nonprofit organizations and government agencies. Prior to joining the advancement team at Guilford College in 1993, Carter was an admissions/marketing coordinator for a residential treatment center for adolescents in Chatham County, N.C.

THE FRANKLIN ROAD STORE of Moore's Lumber & Building Supplies, has been recognized as branch of the year by the corporate offices. The award was presented to Dave Greene, store manager, during a recent company-wide training conference.

WILLIAM G. JOHNSON, a senior programmer/analyst in information systems with the Atlantic Mutual Companies in Roanoke, has been awarded the Associate in Automation Management designation and a diploma by the Insurance Institute of America.

Johnson of Salem is a 1969 graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and secretary of the Blue Ridge Chapter of Charter Property Casualty Underwriters.

ANNE MARIE GREEN and TERRI R. LEWIS have been certified as Accredited Public Relations Professionals by the Public Relations Society of America.

Green is director of community relations for Roanoke County. Lewis is director of communications for the American Red Cross.

HARRY L. WALDRON, senior systems specialist at Atlantic Mutual Insurance Companies in Roanoke, has received the Distinguished Service Award from the Association for Systems Management. The award, the association's highest, honors outstanding service and contributions at all levels of the association and profession.

CLAYTON HOMES OF HOLLINS has been named a top retailer of manufactured homes built by Clayton Homes Inc. Mike McKinney was given a plaque in recognition of the company's achievement.

WANDA P. SEARS, a personal financial adviser with the Roanoke division office of American Express Financial Advisors Inc., has been appointed to the company's Advanced Planner Group-Personal Financial Advisors. Members of the group are among the highest-ranked personal financial advisors in the company.

KELLY SERVICES has received Xerox Corp.'s A-1 Supplier Quality Rating for its quality-management system and quality initiative.

CHARLES LUNSFORD SONS & ASSOCIATES/ROLLINS HUDIG HALL OF VA. INC. has three employees who received the Accredited Adviser in Insurance designation and a diploma from the Insurance Institute of America for completing three courses and national examinations. They are Mary L. Martin, Wanda Brooks Arnold and Sandra W. Bowling.

SOUTHERN STATES COOPERATIVE OF VINTON has been named semifinalist in the 1995 Truck Fleet of the Year contest, conducted by the American Feed Industry Association and Feed Management. The contest recognizes outstanding feed truck operations.

THOMAS A. DLUGOPOLSKI, president of Customized Quality Solutions Inc. of Roanoke, has been certified as a Quality Systems Lead Assessor by the Register Accreditation Board.

RENEE SHAW, daughter of Lydia Ostwald of Roanoke and the late Harry Ostwald, was among the Federal Computer Week's Federal 100 for 1995. The group is 100 executives from government, industry and academia who are nominated by readers and found, by an independent panel of judges, to have had the greatest impact on government systems in 1994.

HAYES, SEAY, MATTERN & MATTERN, INC. has announced the recipients of its 1994 Bonus Award Opportunity Program. The Roanoke winners are Jim Johnson, Jeffrey Yentz, Linda Palmer, Wade Anderson, John Caney, Erin Larsen, Conley Taylor, Chris Bowers, Don Cassaras, Mill Lambert, Lynwood Epperly, Ray Weeks, Tina Bousman, Jennifer Kelly, Sue Fazio, Jack Martin and Lora Harless.

DICK CLEMMER, chairman of the Patrick Henry High School's English department and the Tech Prep Committee, was one of 14 panelists who discussed trends in Tech Prep at a meeting hosted by Prentice Hall and Globe Fearon of the Simon & Schuster Secondary Education Group in Newark, N.J.

DANIEL MICHAEL POWELL, a representative of the federal Environmental Protection Agency, recently received the agency's silver medal for superior service.

Powell established a partnership between private industry and the federal government to evaluate hazardous waste site clean-up technologies at McClellan Air Force Base. in Sacramento, Calif.

Powell, a 1981 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Powell of Roanoke.

MARY B. LORITSCH, an associate professor of radiologic technology at Virginia Western Community College, was the only technologist selected from Virginia to attend a recent American Society of Radiologic Technologists conference in Albuquerque, N.M. The 65 technologists at the conference established an outline for the education requirements future technologists will have to meet.

DALE WILLIAMS, career agent for American United Life Insurance Company's G.W. Williams & Company Inc. in Roanoke, recently qualified for the company's Chairman's Council and was honored for his outstanding performance.

STEVE HAMPTON of Roanoke was named Employee of the Year for 1994 by Camelot Hall of Salem. Hampton, an executive housekeeper, manages the housekeepering and laundry departments and has worked with Camelot for more than two years.

ROANOKE COLLEGE has been awarded a research contract from Grumman Aerospace of Hicksville, N.Y. Christopher Lee, assistant professor of mathematics, was named principal investigator.

JEAN THOMAS, a Realtor with Waldrop Realty in Roanoke, has earned the certified residential specialist designation from the Residential Sales Council of the Realtors National Marketing Institute, an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors.

ELIZABETH PITZER GUSLER of Roanoke has been promoted to curator of museum education at Colonial Williamsburg. She will be curatorial liaison and education spokeswoman for the Williamsburg Reproduction Program.

Gusler received a bachelor's degree from Westhampton College of the University of Richmond and a master's degree in history from the College of William and Mary. She has been with Colonial Williamsburg since 1978.

DONALD L. HELMS JR., manager of the Roanoke branch of Avco Financial Services, has been named to the company's Circle of Excellence. Helms received the award at Avco Financial's recent Managers' Conference in Orlando, Fla.

FROEHLING & ROBERTSON INC. recently presented a recognition award to its Roanoke office for its annual volume of business. F&R is a multidiscipline engineering consultant and testing laboratory with headquarters in Richmond.

CATHERINE M. WELLS, a member of the human resources and administration departments of Liberty Mutual Insurance Co., has earned certification from the Human Resource Certification Institute, which is affiliated with the Society for Human Resource Management.

W.R. "BILL" BESS of Bill Bess Logging has received the Virginia Forestry Association's Logger Merit Award for harvest and management excellence.

Adherence to Virginia's Best Management Practices, harvest planning, utilization, safety, maintenance and appearance of equipment, and state and federal regulation compliance are some aspects reviewed for the award.

BLUE RIDGE PUBLIC TELEVISION has received a $1,000 grant from The Foundation for Roanoke Valley to help fund its ``Medical Update'' series.

The weekly series, aired Wednesday evenings with Drs. Robert Allen and Hugh Craft of Carilion Health System as hosts, is produced in cooperation with the Children's Hospital at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley and The Children's Miracle Network.

The doctors team up with other professionals to provide information and guidance to parents and caregivers.

ALLSTATE INSURANCE has announced the names of its 1994 Honor Ring winners in the Roanoke and New River valleys.

The agents and their years of service are as follows: Anita Williams, 24; Jane Clower, 23; Ron Bingham, 22; Steve Nash, 16; John Beasley, 15; Roger Rakes, 15; Larry Fallen, 14; Joyce McElwaine, 13; Larry Mattox, 10; and Deborah Nash, 6.

Ring winners are individuals with all-around superior performance in sales and customer service. In addition to being ring winners, Williams and Fallen were recognized as 1994 National Conference winners.

AVIS CONSTRUCTION COMPANY INC. of Roanoke has received the Million-Dollar Sales and High Performance Builder awards from Butler Manufacturing for pre-engineered steel purchased from Butler during fiscal year 1994.

Last year Avis carried a 40 percent market share of its trade area.

WANDA BEARD and CHARLES R. SHRADER of Roanoke, sales associates of Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield, have received "SAMMY" awards for outstanding sales performance in 1994.

Beard was named sales leader in the distribution of individual and Medicare supplemental policies for Trigon.

Shrader was recognized for leading Trigon's Western Region Sales Team to top region in the company's regional business unit.

CHRISTINE P. POWELL was named 1995 Woman of the Year for the Longwood Chapter of the American Business Women's Association. Powell has been a member of ABWA for two years and is newsletter editor.

Powell, a 1983 graduate of Virginia Tech, is the marketing coordinator for the Roanoke Civic Center.

S.L.M. DISTRIBUTORS INC. recently received recognition from The Majestic Company as one of its outstanding distributors.

Thirty-seven Majestic distributors in 21 states and Canada, including S.L.M., received the Majestic Outstanding Distributor Award in recognition of strong sales performance in their local markets.

S.L.M. distributes factory-built fireplaces.

FIRST VIRGINIA BANK SOUTHWEST recently presented $1,300 to the Easter Seal Society's Roanoke chapter on behalf of children who participated in the eight valleywide Easter-egg hunts held April 1. The bank sponsored the events in cooperation with the Roanoke Department of Parks and Recreation, Roanoke County Parks and Recreation and Q-99 FM/WSLC AM.

GOOD SAMARITAN HOSPICE, a community-based, nonprofit organization that provides care for terminally ill individuals in the Roanoke Valley, won the Leadership and Achievement Award from the Virginia Association for Hospices Inc.

The hospice's public service announcement, ``Taking Care of Mom,'' focused on strategic planning ideas designed to promote community awareness of hospice services. Nancy Harvey, director of community relations, was honored for outstanding achievements in the category.

The hospice also recently received grants from two local organizations. It received a Community Opportunity Grant toward the purchase of audio-visual equipment for use in patient education and training of staff and volunteers from The Junior League of Roanoke Valley Inc.

The Lutheran Brotherhood Southwest Virginia Branch 8264 contributed matching funds toward upgrading office equipment.
