White House lane closed for security

WASHINGTON - Increased publicity about White House security prompted the Secret Service to close one lane of Pennsylvania Avenue to traffic, officials said Wednesday.

Administration and police officials said the move was not directly connected to a security review that recommends permanently blocking vehicles from the six-lane street.

The Oklahoma City bombing, a spate of security problems at the White House and media accounts of the security review prompted the Secret Service to close the lane of traffic closest to the mansion.

Kids fear for their lives, survey finds

WASHINGTON - American children are frightened about their lives and futures but still look to their parents for advice, according to a survey released Wednesday.

As a group, children ages 10 through 13 think they are more likely to die or be abused than start smoking or drinking, the KidsPeace survey found. It suggested most parents are ill-equipped to deal with today's problems.

``Most parents want to be good parents, but they don't know where to turn when there's a crisis,'' KidsPeace spokesman Mark Stubis told a Capitol Hill news conference.

In releasing the survey, KidsPeace launched a program to train parents to help children deal with fears and problems, and they named talk show host Leeza Gibbons as the national spokeswoman for the effort.

Baker isn't running for president

WASHINGTON - Former Secretary of State James Baker said Wednesday that he has fully recovered from the presidential virus.

A year ago, Baker said he was considering a run for the 1996 Republican presidential nomination.

Asked if that were still a possibility, Baker said ``I intend to remain active in politics and the public policy process. But I'm over whatever short virus might have existed a year or so ago.''

ABC apologizes to Jeb Bush

MIAMI - ABC News has apologized to Jeb Bush for incorrectly quoting a fugitive as saying he paid Bush $75,000 for influence in Washington while Bush's father was vice president.

The error was part of an edited transcript sent to news media before ABC broadcast the ``20-20'' interview with Miguel Recarey Jr.

The segment with Recarey had been scheduled for broadcast April 21 but was delayed because of the Oklahoma City bombing. It is now scheduled to air Friday night.
