The Bengals had 96 points, edging out Dan River by two points. Chatham was third (58) and Laurel Park finished fourth (46).
Bassett was led by the first-place finishes of Tyree Hairston, Cris Hairston and Willie Wade. Tyree Hairston won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 2 inches and finished second in triple jump behind Sandy Hines of Patrick County, who had a jump of 43-8. Cris Hairston won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.98 seconds. Wade won the 800-meter run in 2:02.03.
In girls' competition, Laurel Park dominated with 1171/2 points. Bassett and Patrick County tied for second with 66 points.
The Lancers were paced by Cherron Lampkins, who won the 100-meter hurdles (14.75) and the 300-meter hurdles (48.14). Jamie Hyton of Bassett won the 100-meter dash.
Other dual winners were Fieldale-Collinsville's Cicely Becker (long jump and triple jump) and Tane Sheppard of Patrick County (800- and 1,600-meter runs).
In other regional news:
Christiansburg leads both boys' and girls' team competition after the first day of the rain-shortened New River District track and field championships held at Christiansburg.
Andra Beasley helped lead the Demons' boys' team to 81 points, well ahead of Carroll County at 23. Beasley set a district record in winning the long jump with a leap of 22-9. He also won the shot put with a throw of 43-5. Christiansburg's Larry Carter tied with Brad Sawyers of Carroll County for first in the high jump, and Sam Lucas of Christiansburg won the discus competition.
The Christiansburg girls' team accumulated 76 points, 45 better than Blacksburg. The Demons' Maureen Jackson won the shot put (36-11/2) and the discus (132-8). Pam Jones aided the Blue Demons by winning the long jump with a leap of 16-1/2.
Washington and Lee senior Marilyn Baker, the No.6-ranked player in the nation, upset top-ranked Julie Rosenstein 7-5, 6-2 on Wednesday to lead the Generals to a 6-3 victory over Amherst (Mass.) at the NCAA Division III women's tennis championships at Sweet Briar College.
W&L also got singles wins from freshman Natalia Garcia, Julie Ayers, Ericka Shapard and Shelley Sunderman. Anna O'Connor and Shapard teamed up for the Generals' only doubles victory.
W&L advances to a semifinal matchup today against Kenyon (Ohio), the only team to beat the Generals (20-1) this season.
Ferrum earned its first bid to the NCAA Division III men's golf championships, which will be played May 16-19 at Hulman Links Golf Course in Terre Haute, Ind.
The Panthers are one of 23 teams competing in the event, which involves 120 golfers. Dixie Conference rivals Greensboro, Christopher Newport and Methodist also were selected. Methodist, the defending champion, has won the title four of the past five years.
Ferrum, which won the Virginia Intercollegiate State Championship in April, is led by junior R.J. Weaver of Tunstall High School, who was the medalist at that event.

Shortstop Kevin Kurilla made up for three errors by driving in both Virginia Tech runs as the Hokies defeated UNC Wilmington 2-1 in a non-conference baseball game in Blacksburg.
The Hokies (29-22) scored both of their runs in the sixth inning as Josh Herman led off with a single. David Fitt moved Herman to second with a bloop single, and then Matt Reynolds reached base when Seahawk pitcher John Babson threw high to first fielding a sacrifice bunt. Kurilla then lined a single to right which scored both runs.
Jon Hand (3-3) picked up the win after pitching eight innings and allowing one unearned run on three hits. Hand walked one and struck out seven. Babson (6-4) took the loss for UNC Wilmington (29-22).
