ROANOKE SCHOOL WINNERS in the state Distributive Education Clubs of America Leadership Conference are:

Patrick Henry High School - Love Pate, first in management and supervision, second in promotion and second in overall in food marketing; Cassie Urgo, first, leadership development; Tim Austin, second, civic consciousness; and Evan Monahan, second, social intelligence.

William Fleming High School - Jennifer Sorrels, second, fashion promotional plan; Carla Wallace and Stephanie Tuck, first, career manual; Loree Clark, Paul Witt and Stephanie Barnett, second, chapter marketing research project with Virginia's Explore Park; and Loree Clark, chapter student recognition.

Both schools also earned chapter awards. Patrick Henry placed in following: the District Trustee Award, first; market research, fourth; Blue Chip Award, first; annual report, first.

William Fleming received the Chapter Community Youth Development Project certificate, chapter preferred award and Virginia DECA Day Recognition.

RENEE DOTY, a junior at Carson-Newman College, has been tapped into Mortar Board, the national college senior honor society. Mortar Board recognizes excellence in scholarship, leadership and service and has chapters on nearly 200 college campuses.

JESSICA DAHLGREN, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Dahlgren of Salem, has been awarded a Salem Academic Scholarship to Salem College. Dahlgren was awarded the scholarship in recognition of academic achievement at Northside High School.

JENNIFER SOSNOWSKI, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Sosnowski of Salem, has been awarded a Presidential Scholarship to Salem College. Sosnowski was awarded the scholarship in recognition of outstanding academic and personal achievement.

KATIE FRANKE, daughter of Walter and Bernice Franke of Salem, recently attended the DePauw University Undergraduate Honors Conference, where she presented a project on Walt Disney cartoon production.

Franke, a 1991 graduate of Salem High School, is a senior communication studies major at Lynchburg College.

ROANOKE SCHOOL officials have announced the names of students who placed in the in the Virginia Scholastic Chess Championships in Spotsylvania County. Fifty-nine Roanoke students were among the 290 chess players from all over the state.

Roanoke individual winners were: Mark DiProsperis, second place, and Jonathan Tanner, ninth place, both of Addison Middle School; Jessie Hsing, sixth place, and Justin Marlles, eighth place; both of Madison Middle School; Martin Davis, seventh place, and Adam Tanner, eighth place, both of Raleigh Court Elementary; Tom Raney, third place, and Giles Roberts, ninth place, both of Fishburn Park Elementary.

Team winners were: Madison Middle School, second place. Madison team members are Bobby Holt, Nathon Taylor, Floyd Welton, Allison Holt, Justin Marlles, Andi Muse, Katie Holt, Kamau Foderingham, Jessie Hsing and Akil Foderingham.

Addison Middle School placed fourth. Team members are LaRue Dickerson, Jonathan Tanner, Alvin Baytops, James Clark, Keith Thompson, Mark DiProsperis and Greg Overholser.

Raleigh Court Elementary School also placed fourth with team members Martin Davis, Philip Marlles and Adam Tanner.

Lincoln Terrace Elementary School took fifth place. Team members are Frank Meldrum, Destiny English, April Lee, Antonio Cunningham and Monica Dehaven.

Fishburn Park Elementary School came in first. Team members are Jake Hughes, Fielding Link, John Mobley, Tom Raney and Giles Roberts.

VIRGINIA COLLEGE has announced the names students who have completed graduation requirements and who have been named to the President's List.

Thomas E. Alderson and Jeffrey S. Russell, both of Roanoke, completed graduation requirements.

Tandy Technology Scholars recognizes academic excellence for students and teachers especially in the areas of mathematics, science and computer science.

AMY HAGEN, daughter of Mary Lou and Bo Hagen of Salem, has been named to received the Konrad Steinmetz Scholarship Award from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Virginia Tech. Hagen is a 1992 Northside High School and is majoring in computer engineering.

ROBERT HUMMONS, a second-grader at Fishburn Park Elementary School, placed first in his grade division in the Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl Poster Contest sponsored by the Forest Service and the Blue Ridge District of the National Council of Garden Clubs.

THE FINCASTLE RESOLUTION CHAPTER OF THE SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION has announced the winners of its annual essay contest for students in the seventh and 11th grades. The winners are: Stephanie M. Lane, daughter of Joyce and Thomas Lane; Theresa Bernier, daughter of Joseph and Helen Bernier; Jessie Shires, daughter of Patricia Shires; Andrea Dietz, daughter of Charlotte Dietz; Amanda Willis, daughter of Deborah and Charles Willis; Chris Sowers, son of Bill and Vanessa Sowers; Sarah Casauay, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Santiago Casauay; Chris Newton, son of Richard and Priscila Newton; Nathan Taylor, son of Steve and Joy Taylor; Lee Taylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Taylor; Katie Young, daughter of Richard L. and Rickie Young.

YEN THUY LIEU of Patrick Henry High School and Samuel Manning Jr. of Salem High School, have received scholarships from Delta Kappa Sorority of Epsilon Sigma Alpha. Lieu is attending Hollins College. Manning is attending Virginia Western Community College. The Delta Kappa grants are given on the basis of scholastic endeavors and extra-curricular activities.

AMY MARIE WOODS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Woods of Salem, is one of 12 Sweet Briar College students selected for membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Woods is a graduate of Glenvar High School.

BRONWYN ELIZABETH KEMPER Salem has been selected for membership in the Gavel Chapter of Mortar Board at Converse College, Spartanburg, S.C.

Kemper, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James C. Kemper, Salem, is majoring in elementary and early childhood education.

G. ANDY HORNER, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Richard Horner of Roanoke was named to the dean's list at Virginia Commonwealth University for the fall semester. Horner is a junior majoring in illustration in the school's College of Art.

LAURIE McGHEE, daughter of Sam and Sara McGhee of Roanoke, was named the Most Outstanding Member of 1995 for Xi Sigma Pi, National Forestry Honor Society.

McGhee, a forestry resource management major at Virginia Tech, is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and is involved in the Forestry Club, Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, Society of American Foresters and has co-oped with the Union Camp Corp. and Champion International.
