PROFESSOR INNOCENT OF ATTEMPTED RAPE

A Hampton University assistant professor has been acquitted of a charge of attempting to rape a former student who also was an exotic dancer.

Daniel Bacchus Jr. also was acquitted Wednesday of abduction charges but was convicted in Newport News Circuit Court of assault and battery.

Bacchus, 44, was charged with striking and attempting to rape a woman he had advised in his work as a physical-education teacher.

He denied the charges and said the woman became furious when, after the woman auditioned for a bachelor party by dancing nude for him, he told her he was unimpressed with her act.
