GENERALS FALL SHORT IN TITLE BID

The fight between Washington and Lee and No.1-ranked Kenyon College for a championship berth in the NCAA Division III women's tennis tournament went to the wire Thursday.

But the Generals fell short in their bid when Anna O'Connor watched Kenyon's Renee Brown rally to a 6-7 (7-1), 6-1, 6-2 victory in the No.5 singles match during the teams' semifinal competition at Sweet Briar College. W&L will play for third place at 10 a.m. today against the loser of Thursday's match between Trinity (Texas) and California-San Diego.

W&L (20-2) led 2-1 after doubles wins by Marilyn Baker and Natalia Garcia (8-6 over Tegan Tindall and Amy Rowland) and Julie Ayers and Berry Blankinship (8-4 over Lori Mannheimer and Margie Griffith).

But Baker, ranked sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, was upset at No.1 singles 6-2, 6-2 by Kenyon's Ali St.Vincent, who is ranked eighth. The Generals got singles wins from 17th-ranked Garcia (6-2, 6-3 over Tindall at No.2) and Ericka Shapard (7-5, 6-0 over Mannheimer at No.4).

In other sports in the region:

Bryan King blasted a two-run homer in the eighth inning to give Virginia Tech a 6-5 non-conference baseball victory over UNC Wilmington and give coach Chuck Hartman his 1,099th career win.

The Seahawks (29-23) took a 5-4 lead in the eighth when Bryan Britt reached on an error and moved to third on a single by Matt Oakley. Jason Roach's single scored Britt and moved Oakley to third. Oakley scored on a double steal after getting in a rundown in which Bo Durkac missed the tag as he chased Oakley to the plate.

Tech (30-22) answered in the bottom half of the inning when Matt Reynolds singled with one out. King then hit a Jason Ramsey pitch over the left-field fence to give the Hokies the win.

Ramsey (5-4) went eight innings and struck out 13. Brian Young (3-0), who got the last two outs of the eighth inning, picked up the win.

Christiansburg's Andra Beasley put on a dominating performance as the Blue Demons won both the boys' and girls' team competitions at the New River District track and field championships at Christiansburg.
