As titular head of the state Democratic Party, Beyer's designation of Wrenn almost certainly will lead to her election at the state central committee meeting June 24.
``She will be a great chair,'' Beyer said Thursday. ``She has been very effective in Fairfax County.''
He noted that soon after the Republican congressional landslide in November, Wrenn led Democrats to a victory in Fairfax County, when Kate Hanley was elected chairwoman of the Fairfax Board of Supervisors. Hanley replaced a Republican, Tom Davis, who had been elected to the House of Representatives.
Democrats then won another special election in Fairfax in March to fill Hanley's seat on the board.
``We need someone who knows how to win,'' Beyer said.
Mark Warner announced Wednesday that he would step down as chairman on June 24 to explore a bid for the U.S. Senate.
