The Southwest Virginia Ballet Company was granted ``performing company'' status at the recent Southeast Regional Ballet Assoc. Festivall in Greenville, S.C.
The SVB achieved this status in two years. Last year, it was accepted into the association as an ``intern'' company.
Terri Post is the company's artistic director.
The company can be seen in the bi-annual performance of "The Nutcracker" in December at the Roanoke Civic Center.
J611 memories
The Virginia Museum of Transportation is seeking participants for an oral history program dealing with the J611. Interested parties will be asked to recount their experiences in maintaining, building, running, or riding behind the steam engine.
Persons wanting to put their memories on tape or donate memorabilia or pictures for the new J611 exhibit should call 342-5670.
The museum is located at 303 Norfolk Ave., Roanoke. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Saturday, noon-5 p.m. on Sunday.
Book signing
Glenn McMullen, author of ``A Surgeon With Stonewall Jackson: The Civil War Letters of Dr. Harvey Black,'' will sign copies of his book May 20, at the University Volume Two Bookstore, University Mall, Blacksburg.
A reception will be held from 2-3 p.m. A guest lecture and the book signing will follow.
McMullen was head of Special Collections at the Virginia Tech Library and is currently head of the Special Collections Department at the Iowa State University Library.
Dr. Black was one of the surgeons who assisted in the amputation of General Jackson's arm.
