SGRO TO SPEAK AT TECH COMMENCEMENT

Beverly Sgro, Virginia's secretary of education, will speak today at Virginia Tech's 123rd commencement.

Sgro served as Tech's dean of students until Gov. George Allen tapped her to oversee the state's educational efforts in 1994. She worked in several administrative positions at Tech since 1981 and had been associated with the university for more than 20 years.

Commencement begins at 9 a.m. in Lane Stadium.

Blacksburg police plan to stay alert for any potential traffic problems but do not expect serious tie-ups. Capt. Walter Mosby said traffic may slow at U.S. 460 bypass and Southgate Drive, but if recent years are indicative, any congestion should clear itself up.

Virginia Tech police will be providing traffic control, and advised those planning to attend the ceremonies to leave early to allow time for parking.

Following the Lane Stadium ceremonies, which are expected to last a little more than an hour, graduates from the university's eight undergraduate colleges will move to individual ceremonies of their own. Academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences will hold their own cermonies.

Richard Cranwell, majority leader in the House of Delegates, will speak at the department of political science's graduation program, to be held at 11 a.m. in Colonial Hall in Squires Student Center.
