TROOPER ENTERS RACE FOR SHERIFF

A retiring Virginia State Trooper wants to challenge incumbent Ralph Dobbins for Pulaski County sheriff.

Norman W. Dowdy, 60, announced Friday that he will seek the Republican nomination at the GOP's mass meeting Monday at 7 p.m. in the County Courts building. Voters will elect constitutional officers, Board of Supervisor members and School Board members in November.

Dowdy, a 36-year veteran, will retire June 1 with the rank of master state trooper.

He cited his experience, his concern for the county and a "desire for equitable justice for all citizens." He said that means he will pursue all violations of the law.

Dowdy "is called to public service by the people who count - the citizens - the true 'grass roots' of Pulaski County," according to his news release.

He stated he "has the interest of the employees at the Sheriff's Office in mind," a reference, he said, to a similar comment by Dobbins when he announced his re-election bid.

"I'm interested in those people," Dowdy said Friday, noting that he has known and worked with some of them for 30 years. His son is a patrol deputy with the department.

Dowdy said he would elaborate on key issues and platforms later in the campaign.

"I'm an outsider and I'm going to fight my way uphill to get in," he said.

Dowdy has lived in Pulaski County for 31 years. He is married and has three children. He is a member of the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce and attends the New Dublin Presbyterian Church.

Dobbins has been sheriff since January 1991, when he was appointed to complete the term of Sheriff Frank Conner, who retired. Dobbins was elected to a full four-year term in 1991.
