The Generals led 2-1 after doubles play, but dropped the first set in five of its six singles matches. Senior Marilyn Baker came from behind to defeat Laura Brady 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in three sets at No.1 singles. Freshman Ericka Shapard rallied to beat Jenny Brazier 0-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No.4 singles to win her school record 30th match of the season and Anna O'Connor cruised in straight sets over Chrissy Supark 6-0, 6-1 at No.5 singles.
Washington and Lee finished with a record of 21-2, with both losses coming by 5-4 decisions to Kenyon. Kenyon, which beat the Generals in the semifinals Thursday, defeated California-San Diego 5-4 to win its second national championship in the past three years.
Baker and Natalia Garcia will represent Washington and Lee in the individual singles and doubles competition at the individual NCAA tournament that begins today. Baker, a two-time All-American, has a career record of 98-15.
