GLENVAR, BATH COUNTY CAPTURE PIONEER TITLES

Glenvar won six events en route to the girls' championship and Ben Essex combined with teammate Kenneth Jones to lead Bath County to the boys' title Friday in the Pioneer District track championship at Covington High School.

Trish Nervo placed first in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs to lead the Highlander girls past James River and Bath County, which tied for second. The Highlanders finished with 125 points while the Knights and Chargers tied with 95 points each.

Six runners each won two events in the boys' competition, but it was the Chargers' duo of Essex and Jones that helped Bath County pull out the title. Essex placed first in the long jump and triple jump, and Jones swept the 110- and 300-meter hurdles as Bath County finished with 1331/3 points. Covington was second with 118 and James River was third with 95 points..

THREE RIVERS MEET: Giles swept the boys' and girls' Three Rivers District track titles in Pearisburg.

The Giles boys out-distanced their closest opponent by 1201/2 points. Reggie Hoston captured individual titles in the long jump and 100-meter dash. Maurice Milton placed first in three events, including the triple jump and both hurding events.

Floyd County finished second with 105.5 points, despite having only two first-place finishes, both by Ben Cooke. Radford was third at 104.5, only one point behind Floyd, and Auburn finished last with 13 points.

Tomika Saunders paced Giles in the girls' competition by placing first in four events and second twice for a total of 56 out of the Spartans' 199 points. Keeli Whetzel placed second twice, third once, and fourth twice to also aid Giles in its district title.

Giles blew out second-place Radford by 90 points and Floyd finished only three points behind the Bobcats (106).
