NAMES ON CAMPUS

ANGELA HOWARD of Christiansburg recently was initiated into the Virginia Epsilon Chapter of Pi Gamma Mu, the international honor society in social sciences, at Radford University. Howard is majoring in political science.

The Virginia Tech Faculty Women's Club selected two women as recipients of the 1995-96 Excellence in Academic Careers Scholarships. Two $1,000 tuition scholarships were awarded to Virginia Tech rising seniors ALISSA COWAN of Sterling and LORI RATLIFF of Pembroke.

A finance major, Ratliff holds a 3.86 grade-point average and is recipient of an Anderson Consulting Scholarship in the Pamplin College of Business. She is a member of several honor societies, the accounting society, Women's Resource Center and Tae Kwon Do Club. After graduation, Ratliff plans to pursue graduate studies in international and public affairs at Columbia University and a law degree, specializing in human rights and humanitarian rights.

Cowan is majoring in wildlife science and holds a 3.99 grade-point average. She is a recipient of the John Lee Pratt, Julian N. Cheatham and Jeffrey Andrew Fuerst scholarships. She plans to pursue a graduate degree in natural resource interpretation.

MICHELLE KRUSIEG of Virginia Beach was selected as alternate. Krusieg is double-majoring in theater arts and English. She is a recipient of a four-year Virginia Tech Talent and Alumni scholarship. She recently was selected for summer study at the English Speaking Union at Oxford University.

Two New River Community College students will travel to Orlando, Fla., in July to compete against students from across the country at the national Phi Beta Lambda conference.

JAMES BOLDEN MILLS JR. and TAMMY SHEPHERD, both of Radford, won first-place awards at the Virginia Leadership PBL Conference , which qualified them for the national competition. The Virginia competition, in Staunton, included students from four-year colleges and universities as well as other community colleges.

Mills won top honors in marketing, and Shepherd placed first in the word-processing competition.

Other students who placed at the competition include KAREN BROOKS of Christiansburg, second place in Ms. Future Business Executive; and NORA VINION of Radford, third place in accounting II. Other NRCC students who competed at the event include MICHELLE WAY of Christiansburg; ELLEN BIELEMA of Pearisburg; OLIVIA KURSTEDT of Newport and CHASE LOWE of Floyd.

The Virginia Tech Student Professional Chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers won first place and scored a perfect 700 points in the Allied Signal Contest during the ASME Region IV Conference in March. The competition measures total student activities for the past year.

Several students also received individual awards, including JAMES STITH of Blacksburg. Stith won second place in the national design competition.

The New River Community College Educational Foundation has awarded 46 New River Valley students scholarships for the 1995-96 academic year. The $1,000 awards are based on such criteria as financial need and scholastic achievement.
