BOUNCER SEPARATED FROM PART OF HIS EAR

A bouncer at the Tanglewood Holiday Inn's Elephant Walk nightclub lost part of his ear in a scuffle at the club early Saturday, Roanoke County police reported.

Police said the attack on bouncer Steve White, address not given, occurred shortly after midnight.

Susan Lowe, acting chief of the Clearbrook Rescue Squad, said White was trying to prevent a customer from re-entering the nightclub when the man lunged at White and latched onto his ear with his teeth.

"The guy had bit a big chunk out of his ear," Lowe said. "There wasn't much of it left."

Someone had picked up the piece of White's ear and put it in a cup of cold water before the rescue squad arrived. Lowe put the ear in a plastic bag with ice and took it with White to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. A hospital official wouldn't comment on whether doctors were able to reattach the ear.

Charged with malicious wounding and public intoxication related to the attack was Timothy Thompson, 26, of 1014 Stewart Ave., Roanoke, according to the county magistrate's office. Thompson remained in jail Saturday, having failed to post a $1,000 bond, a jailer said.
