BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - President Carlos Menem claimed a re-election victory Sunday and dedicated his triumph to his son, who was killed in a March 15 helicopter crash.
Menem declared victory on state-owned ATC television based on unofficial exit polls giving him 47 percent of the vote. He needed 45 percent, or 40 percent with a 10-point lead over the runner-up, to win without a second round between the top two vote-getters.
The exit polls gave 34 percent of the vote to Sen. Jose Bordon of the center-left alliance Frepaso.
