ROCKBRIDGE JOINS NORTHSIDE IN SEMIS

Northside and Rockbridge County came up with close victories in the first round of the Blue Ridge District boys' soccer tournament Monday.

The host Vikings halted Lord Botetourt 7-5 in overtime, and Rockbridge County squeezed by Alleghany 4-3 on the Mounties' field.

Northside plays host to the semifinals and championship games. The Vikings meet Salem at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, while William Byrd takes on Rockbridge County at 5 p.m.

Northside (9-4-3) outscored the Cavaliers 3-1 in the extra session as Chris Lucado scored two of his three goals and Robbie Trent had one. Greg Cottone also scored twice for Northside, and Trent scored once in regulation.

Jamie Bednarek scored four for Lord Botetourt, which took a 5-4 lead in the first overtime period before Northside scored three in the last extra session.

Nikola Janjic had a goal and an assist to spark Rockbridge County. Ahn Marks, Kevin Wheeler and Chad Brown also scored for the Wildcats. Nablya Noad scored twice for Alleghany.

In other soccer:

ROANOKE VALLEY DISTRICT: In Dublin, host Pulaski County thumped William Fleming 10-1 in a first-round match.

The Cougars led 9-0 at the half as nine players scored. Timmy Williams led Pulaski County with two goals, and Fleming's only score was an own goal when a Cougar headed the ball into his own net.

Pulaski County entertains Cave Spring at 5 p.m. today in one semifinal, and Patrick Henry meets Franklin County in the other semifinal at 7 p.m. in Dublin. Championship games for the boys and girls are Wednesday at sites to be determined.

PIEDMONT DISTRICT: Torrey Gallant and John Tunnell each had a goal and an assist in overtime to give Magna Vista a 2-0 victory over Bassett in the first round of the district tournament in Martinsville.

Tunnell also made two saves to share the shutout with John Saunders (six saves) for the Warriors. Jeff Frady made nine stops for Bassett.

Magna Vista advances to a semifinal game against host Martinsville at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Fieldale-Collinsville takes on Laurel Park at 5 p.m. in the other semifinal.

Tennis

In Galax, Narrows' Jay Webb won the boys' singles and doubles titles.

Webb won the singles championship with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Fort Chiswell's Andy Altman. Webb had advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 semifinal rout of Grayson County's Joey Swaha, and Altman earned a spot in the final with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 decision over Galax's Shawn Lundy.

Webb also teamed up with Jayson Spangler to win the doubles title by besting Galax's Lundy and Stevie Grimes 6-3, 6-4. Webb and Spangler advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 semifinal victory over Swaha and Ernie Pritchard of Grayson County. Lundy and Grimes reached the final with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Fort Chiswell's Altman and Justin Harrell.

Galax will be the district's team representative in the Region C tournament May 22-23 in Radford by virtue of having the district's best record during the regular season.

THREE RIVERS DISTRICT:In Radford, Giles' Russell Bowling defeated Rajive Tayal of Radford 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the Region C tournament.

Bowling came out of the semifinals with a victory over Justin Yates of Floyd County, 6-0, 6-1, and Tayal stopped Scott Blevins of Auburn 6-7 (7-5), 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles, Bowling teamed with Jonathan St.Leger to beat Yates and Gannon Bender 6-4, 6-3 for the title. Bowling and St.Leger had stopped Jon Reed and Jason Guill of Auburn 6-1, 6-1 while Yates and Bender defeated Tayal and Adam Funk 6-4, 6-4.

In team play, there will be a playoff today at the Dedmon Center courts between Radford and Floyd County for the title and Region C berth.

In a playoff at the Dedmon Center, Radford defeated Floyd County 5-4 to earn the district's spot in the Region C girls' tournament May 22-23 at George Wythe. Radford earned its way into a three-way playoff by beating Giles last week.

There is no team tournament, but the individual singles and doubles tournaments are today at Shawsville.

BLUE RIDGE DISTRICT: In Salem, 1994 Group AA champion Salem defeated Northside 9-0 and William Byrd beat Lord Botetourt 6-3 in the boys' team semifinals. They will meet in the championship match at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Salem Civic Center.

The individual matches will be played today at the Salem Civic Center, starting with singles semifinals at 4 p.m. followed by semifinal doubles.

ROANOKE VALLEY DISTRICT: At River's Edge, Billy Rawlings of Cave Spring defeated Adams England of Patrick Henry 6-4, 6-2 to win the boys' singles title.

Rawlings had beaten Charles Montgomery of Franklin County 6-2, 7-5 and England had topped Felipi Fierro of Fleming 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in semifinal matches. Rawlings goes to the Northwest Region tournament at Woodbridge.

In doubles semifinals, Patrick Henry's Andrew Thomas and Hunter Carson won by default over Franklin County, and Cave Spring's Randy Price and Jason Pialek defeated Richard Gardner and Doug Freeman of Pulaski County 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Finals are at 9 a.m. today.

In a team first-round match, Pulaski County defeated William Fleming 8-1 to earn a spot opposite No.1 Patrick Henry at 10:30 a.m., while Cave Spring plays Franklin County.
