DIVISION III BASEBALL TOURNEY SNUBS FERRUM

Ferrum College, looking for its eighth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III baseball tournament, was passed over Monday despite a 32-10 record.

Only one other Panthers baseball team has won more games, but the selection committee elected to take only two teams from the Dixie Conference and chose regular-season champion Methodist (29-16) and tournament champion North Carolina Wesleyan (31-10).

Methodist swept a three-game series with Ferrum, and North Carolina Wesleyan won two of three games with the Panthers.

``Finishing third in our conference hurt us,'' said coach Abe Naff. ``They usually take three from our conference. But we're usually the first or second. I feel like the teams that are going should go. But Ferrum should be going somewhere, too.''

Ferrum had made the field on three earlier occasions when it had 10 or more losses.

``It's an injustice,'' Naff said. ``We have a better winning percentage than any of the four teams that is going to the South Region. I hate it for our four seniors [Keith Mayhew, Chad France, Kevin Anderson and Chad Maddox].

``I always want our season to end on the field, not in a committee meeting. It was a surprise to us. You have to learn from this. Sometimes you get dealt a bad hand. We've got to get better; 32-10 is one of the best years we've ever had against the best schedule we've ever had.''
