I'VE LEARNED TO APPRECIATE THE FOLKS WHO REALLY PLAY

For the past two years, I have written about community sports happenings in and around the New River Valley.

This spring, I figured it was about time I did something more than just write. So, I joined a softball team. Of course, given my athletic skill level, I made sure I joined a team in an appropriate league - Blacksburg Church C.

I think I've done pretty well. In two games (through last week), I'm 2-for-4 and I've walked twice. I scored a couple of runs and knocked in a couple of runs. And, except for a base running blunder and a bad throw, I haven't done anything wrong. And my team - Newman Community - is 2-0.

Now that I am playing, I have learned two things. The first is a greater appreciation for the participants in the recreation activities that have been reported in this space over the last two years.

The second is that you do not slide in shorts. And I have the strawberries (five) to prove it.

And now, on to what this column is really designed to do - report on area community sports.

RUNNING WORLD: The 14th Annual Dr. D.B. Jurisson Memorial Run is less than a month away.

The Christiansburg road race is June 10 at 9 a.m.

The courses for both the featured 5K run and the one-mile fun run start at Hickock Street and end near Town Square. The entry fee is $10 through June 7 and $13 on race day. Awards will be given to the overall men's and women's winners in both runs and to the top finishers in each of the 12 age groups in the 5K.

SPIKES AND SERVES SET: Mount Tabor finished perfect. A perfect 30-0 in the Christiansburg Co-ed Church B Volleyball League. Cambria Baptist I and Prophets were tied for second at 11 games back (19-11).

St. Paul I held on to win the Co-ed Church A Volleyball League in Christiansburg. St. Paul lost three of its last six games but still finished 25-5. That was three games ahead of runner-up St. Paul/Old Brick (22-8).
