BALSER, Hazel M., 72, a resident of Friendship Manor Nursing Home, Roanoke, and formerly of Staunton, Va., passed away Monday, May 15, 1995 at Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem, Va. She was born February 10, 1923 in Virginia to William Daniel Jones and Gwen Lovelace Jones. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Staunton, Va. and a retired nurse, having been employed with Western State Hospital for 32 years. Surviving are her sister, Mrs. Adrian ``Jean"" Crabtree, Christiansburg; two nieces, Mrs. Timothy ``Wanda"" Miles, Salem, Miss Beverly Crabtree, Christiansburg; and several cousins. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, at 2 p.m in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel, Independence, Va. Interment will be at Blevins Cemetery, Troutdale, Va. Dr. Maurice T. FRENCH, Patteson, 64, of Route 2, Narrows, died Sunday, May 14, 1995, in the Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. A lifelong resident of Giles County, he was born on March 25, 1931, and was the son of the late George and ``Bessie"" Patteson French. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine M. French and his second wife, Helen B. French. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George B. French of Narrows, Peter J. and Shelby French, New Castle; a stepdaughter, Angela Blankenship, Narrow; a brother and sister-in-law, William P. and Margaret B. French, Narrows; a sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Harry Kilbourne, Florida; a sister, Harriett Ragl and, Roanoke; grandchildren, Jo Ellen French, Narrows, Colleen French, New Castle, Ashley Blankenship and Andrea Blankenship, Amanda and Jessica Bostwick, Narrows. HELMS, Jesse Davis, 67, of 1123 Corn Tassell Trail, Martinsville, died Tuesday, May 16, 1995, at Memorial Hospital, Martinsville-Henry County. He was born in Vinton, Va. on February 5, 1928, a son of the late Charlie F. and Annie Rose Davis Helms. Mr. Helms was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Hite Helms. Mr. Helms was retired from Sprint which was previously Centel and formerly Lee Telephone Co. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He was past president of the Martinsville Lions Club and active in Hospice/MH MHC. He was a member of the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. Survivors include his daughter, Karen E. Helms, Portland, Ore.; son, Stephen M. Helms, Martinsville; daughter-in-law, Dawn M. Helms, Martinsville; sisters, Mae Shelton Harrington, Gordonsville, Edith Wood, Roanoke; brothers, Jack Helms, Rocky Mount, J.C. Helms, Martinsville; one grandson, Dylan Michael Helms, Martinsville. KINNEY, Charles E., 92, of Rockville, Md., and formerly of Highland Rd., Salem, died on Friday, May 12, 1995, in Shady Grove Nursing Center. Born in Fairmont, W.Va., he was a 1926 civil engineering graduate of West Virginia University. He retired in 1965, having spent more than 30 years in the design and construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway. He was a member of Raleigh Court Methodist Church and Virginia Heights Masonic Lodge #324. With wife, Ada, he moved in 1974 from Salem to Kissimmee, Fla ., where Ada died in 1981. Survivors include his son, Charles W. Kinney of Silver Spring, Md.; daughter, Rosemary K. Brandus of Rockville, Md.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Point Pleasant, W.Va
LEGARD, James Robert, (``Red""), 62, of Bedford, died Monday, May 15, 1995, in Bedford County Memorial Hospital, Bedford. He was a native of Marion and had been living in Bedford for several years. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Legard and brother, Tom Legard. He is survived by one daughter, Cindy Cunningham of Columbus, Ohio; two sons, James (Bo) Legard of Chilhowie, and Anthony (Tony) Legard of Bristol; his mother, Mary Lee Legard of Marion; a special friend, Rhonda Wilson of Bedford; one nephew and three nieces; four granddaughters. Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 18, 1995, at 10 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Marion, with the Rev. E.C. (Gene) Little officiating. LINEBERRY, Risse Landreth, 93, of Lynchburg, formerly of Galax, died Tuesday, May 16, 1995. She is the widow of Everette Lineberry. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Roger Thomas of Forest; two grandchildren, Beth Burtner of Harrisonburg, Ken Thomas of Piedmont, S.C.; four great-granddaughters. She was the last surviving sister of the late Senator Floyd Landreth. She and her husband were owner and manager of Lineberry Jewelry Store from it's beginning in 1931 until it was sold in 1955. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church, Galax. Interment will be in the Felts Memorial Cemetery. LYCKE, Pamela Jean Kent, 38, of Fairfield, died Monday, May 15, 1995, in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Ms. Lycke was born July 27, 1956, in New York a daughter of Jean Greenlees Ruggles of Montauk, New York and the late Frederick Kent. She was a teacher at the Rockbridge County High School. Surviving besides her mother are two sons, Matthew James Lycke and Ian Hedges Lycke both of the home; stepfather, James J. Ruggles, Montauk, New York. Funeral services will be conducted 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Patrick and the Rev. David Moore officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in Montauk, New York.
MANTZ, Charlotte Martin, 72, of Radford, died Tuesday, May 16, 1995, in Community Hospital, Roanoke. Born May 5, 1923 in Radford, she was the daughter of the late, John A.and Lanora LaBelle Mantz. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Ruby L. Wade. She was a member of Grove Avenue Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Radford College and was owner and operator of Mantz Florist for 30 years. She is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Moir Weeks, Roanoke; and a very special friend, Helen L. Dobbins, Christiansburg. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home, Pulaksi with the Rev. Clarence Dishman officiating. MOORE, Clyde Price, Sr., 84, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, May 16, 1995. He was born on June 21, 1910, and was Founder and past President of Moore Tire Company, Inc. At the time of his death, he was serving as Chairman of the Board. Surviving are one son, Clyde Price Moore, Jr.; sister, Miss Lessie Lee Moore; grandson, Brian P. Moore; great-grandson, Thomas P. He was a member of Belmont Christian Church, a Veteran of World War II, a 32nd degree Mason of Lakeland Lodge #190, a member of Scottish Rite Bodies and Kazim Temple Shrine. He was retired as a Captain in the Roanoke City Fire Department with 35 years service. He is survived by his wife, Mildred ``Mickey"" W. Wirt; two sisters and brother-in-law, Mrs. Nina Crotts, Salem and Mrs. Ivadean Herndon, and husband Edward, Roanoke; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Vera P. Willis; four sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Lois and Warren Hawley, Frances and Roscoe Musslewhite, Margaret and George Miller, Ruth and Bob Farmer. ``Uncle Tony"" is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
