Moir, who released the names of his recruits Wednesday, said replenishing the Maroons' inside strength was imperative. Roanoke lost to graduation this year Joe Schrantz, Darnell Norman and Bryant Lee, a two-time, first-team selection in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
``I'm real pleased,'' Moir said. ``They're all good prospects.''
Moir said Chris Cunningham, a 6-foot-4, 200-pounder out of St. Maria Goretti High School in Hagerstown, Md., was recruited by NCAA Division I programs before a knee injury sidelined him his whole senior season. Cunningham averaged 16.5 points and seven rebounds a game while leading Goretti to a 21-10 record his junior year.
Moir also landed post players Brandon Martin of St. Stephens in Alexandria and Kevin Mancini of Weslake High School in Valhalla, N.Y. Martin, 6-5 and 190 pounds, averaged 11.7 points and 8.6 rebounds, and had 74 assists and 69 steals for St. Stephens last year. Mancini, 6-5 and 220 pounds, averaged 14.6 points, 12.3 rebounds and three blocked shots for Weslake.
Roanoke's other recruits are 6-3, 170-pound Tim Dougherty of Nanesmond-Suffolk Academy and Rick Shearer, a 6-3, 180-pound forward from Fallston, Md.
Moir was unable to sign a true point guard during the recruiting season, but said he hoped former Northside standout Nathan Hungate would be able to fill that spot next year as a sophomore.
``We're counting on Nathan at the point position,'' Moir said. ``He and [rising junior Jason] Bishop can be as good of guards as you could ask for.''
