COUPLE FOUND SLAIN IN PARKED CAR

A North Carolina man was charged with capital murder Wednesday, accused of shooting his sister-in-law and her husband while looking for his estranged wife.

James S. Quesenberry, 44, and Tina Hill Quesenberry, 33, of Carroll County were shot in the head about 10:20 p.m. Tuesday while they sat in a parked car at an apartment complex, authorities said.

Their 6-year-old child was in the car but was not harmed, Hillsville Police Chief Kenneth H. Sharp Jr. said.

Dennis Earl Stoneman, 43, was arrested near his home in Surry County, N.C., early Wednesday and was being held in jail there pending extradition proceedings, said Glen Nester, chief deputy sheriff in Carroll County.

Sharp said Stoneman was arguing with the couple and looking for his wife, Theresa Stoneman. The Quesenberrys were helping her move into the apartment complex, authorities said.

Sharp said that Patrolman Leonard Howell found the bodies while on his way to the apartment building to investigate suspected gunshots. While Howell was on his way, the 911 dispatch office received information that there were two gunshot victims in the apartment parking lot.

James Quesenberry was a former owner of the Sports Stop in Pulaski County, where he grew up and was active in recreation sports and other community events.

Pulaski YMCA Director Jack Leahy recalled that Quesenberry worked as a YMCA program director and always was willing to help with youth basketball.

``He was just a nice fellow,'' Leahy said.

Staff writer Paul Dellinger contributed information to this story.
