Kevine Lee Dillon, 22, first denied the charge but later admitted shaki:ng the baby when she began crying, Detective Timothy Hayden of the Bedford County Sheriff's Department testified.
Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judge Philip A. Wallace on Tuesday certified Dillon's child-abuse charge to the grand jury scheduled for June 2. If convicted, Dillon could face up to 10 years in prison.
Pediatrician Donald Kees testified that the infant's head was swollen with blood, caused by ``bruising and shearing of the brain.''
The baby's mother had left the baby for Dillon to watch for about 10 minutes while the woman drove to a store, according to testimony.
When she returned and called rescue workers, the baby was having difficulty breathing and was vomiting, cold to the touch and pale, witnesses said.
The infant, who is not related to Dillon, was in the courtroom during Tuesday's hearing and appeared healthy.
``The big question now is whether this child will have any permanent neurological disorders,'' Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Randy Krantz said after the hearing.
