Tommy Davis and Harry Berrios led off the eighth with consecutive hits off Salem reliever Mike Zolecki. Davis was picked off second base, with Berrios advancing to second during a rundown. Berrios later stole third and scored when Grunewald, who had just entered the game, threw low to first base on a ball that would have ended the inning.
Berrios homered in the first inning off Salem starter Keith Barnes to give the Keys a 2-0 lead. The Avalanche cut the deficit in half when John Giudice hit a solo home run in the second inning.
Salem went ahead 4-2 with a three-run fourth inning. Forry Wells led off with a home run, a run-producing single by Mark Wells gave Salem a 3-2 lead, and a sacrifice fly by Mike Higgins gave the Avalanche a two-run cushion.
The Keys got two runs on a bizarre series of events in the fifth inning. A wild pitch by Barnes put Frederick runners on second and third. Another wild pitch bounded away from Salem catcher Higgins, allowing both runners to score and tying the score at 5-5.
The teams traded runs in the seventh inning. Chris Sexton scored for Salem on a hit by Brian Culp and the Keys retaliated on a two-out hit by Trovin Valdez that plated Wes Hawkins.
Salem had a chance in the ninth inning when Giudice and Mark Wells singled. A sacrifice bunt by Higgins moved the runners to second and third, but Sexton was called out on strikes and Vincente Garcia flied out to center field to end the game.
