PVT. FIRST CLASS WILLIAM M. PANNELL, son of Claudia M. Pannell of Roanoke, has been named an honor graduate of the Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry, Virginia Army National Guard.

He completed advanced individual training and finished first in the eight-week food service specialist course at Fort Lee.

ROANOKE VALLEY RESIDENTS who recently completed training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, S.C., include: Pvt. Kelly D. Graham, son of Thomas D. and Linda S. Graham; Pfc. Joshua L. Senter, son of Elaine Kellam; Pfc. Patrick R. Hart, son of Ralph W. and Sue B. Hart; Pvt. Isaac T. Van Patten, son of Isaac T. Van Patten IV; Pvt. Jacob W. Tuck, son of Lawrence W. Tuck and Delaine F. Newcomb; Pfc. Thomas A. Hash, son of Susan C. Hubbard; Pvt. Michael J. Prater, son of Ronnie G. Prater and Brenda S. Prater; Pvt. Scott R. Kirby, son of Wayne M. and Sharon H. Kirby; Pvt. Jamie D. Lee, son of Lonnie D. Lee and Shelby J. Wiley; Pvt. Cary L. Sweet, son of Robert W. and Brenda M. Sweet; and Pfc. Ray B. Shanks, son of Fred B. Shanks.

SGT. DARIN L. BLACK of Buchanan has earned the Army Achievement Medal from the Virginia Army National Guard for exceptionally meritorious achievement.

STEVE M. HAUPT, son of James M. and Wanda F. Haupt of Vinton, recently completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 1992 graduate of William Byrd High School.

CPL. BRIAN H. WEBB, son of Howard and Linda Webb of Roanoke, was among the Marines who provided cover for the final withdrawal of U.N. troops from Somalia during Operation United Shield.

Webb, a 1990 graduate of Craig County High School, is aboard the USS Belleau Wood.

PVT. SHANNON M. SALSER, son of Janet H. and Woodrow W. Obenchain of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. He is a 1994 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

PFC. ELIZABETH S. STEFFENSEN of Roanoke was given the honorary rank of six-star general by Korean civic leaders during the United Service Organizations Council of Korea's 24th annual Six-Star Salute.

Civic leaders used the occasion to express their country's gratitude to Steffensen, who repairs missiles at Camp Hovey, Korea, and more than 100 other enlisted personnel from the United States, Korea and the United Nations Command serving throughout South Korea.

AIRMAN BRIAN C. STONEBURNER recently graduated from the airman leadership school at Incirlik Air Base, Adana, Turkey. Stoneburner is a 1990 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

PVT. PAUL J. SCAFFIDI, son of Paul Scaffidi Sr. of Roanoke and Vicki L. Scaffidi of Horseheads, N.Y., recently completed basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

TECH. SGT. MELVIN YOUNG, son of Oscar and Frances H. Young of Roanoke, has been decorated with the Air Force Commendation Medal. A flight training manager at Ramstein Air Base in Kaiserslautern, Germany, Young is a 1976 graduate of William Fleming High School.

SPEC. MICHAEL L. YOUNG of Roanoke has been promoted to sergeant in the Army Reserves. Young is a graduate of Patrick Henry High School and is serving at Fort Pickett in Blackstone.

SEAMAN RECRUIT JACK F. RIGGS, son of Jack F. and Beth M. Riggs of Roanoke, completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Riggs is a 1994 graduate of Northside High School.

AIRMAN 1ST CLASS LEONARD W. DISHNER, son of Barry W. and Sharon H. Dishner of Roanoke, has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is a 1994 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

SEAMAN APPRENTICE RICKY A. THORNHILL, son of Ricky A. and Bev A. Thornhill of Roanoke, recently graduated from training at Coast Guard Recruit Training Center, Cape May, N.J. He is a 1993 graduate of William Fleming High School.

CAPT. RICHARD J. BOSWORTH has been appointed squadron commander of the Roanoke Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol.

He was director of cadet orientation flights with the squadron and has been patrol member for a year. Bosworth is a control systems engineer with General Electric Co.
