RELIGION BRIEFS

THE ANNUAL MEMORIAL SERVICE for police, firefighters, rescue squad members and their auxiliaries is scheduled for Sunday at Villa Heights Baptist Church, 4080 Challenger Ave. N.E. The 27th service will begin at 11 a.m. and will be conducted by the Rev. Harold C. Lewis, pastor.

ST. JOHN'S EPISCOPAL CONGREGATION has pledged $2.5 million to a building and renovation campaign. Announcement of the initial pledges was made on May 7 at a celebration service at Hotel Roanoke. The church, which has stood in downtown Roanoke since 1892, will be made more accessible to those who cannot climb steps. The church also will remodel the administrative and education areas and add a community meeting center.

A BENEDICTINE MORNING RETREAT to enhance the spiritual life of Christians will be in progress Saturday from 9 to noon at St. John's Episcopal Church, 801. S. Jefferson St. in downtown Roanoke. It is free but registration is requested by calling 343-9341. The Rev. Thomas P. O'Dell, rector, will lead the retreat.

THE REV. ROY E. HEINLEN JR. will become pastor of Troutville Church of the Brethren on July 15. The pastor, 41, is coming from Dawson, Pa., where he served a United Methodist congregation in the western part of the state. In the ministry for 14 years, Heinlen has also served two other congregations and is a graduate of Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington. He and his wife, Candy Wolfe Heinlen, a certified medical assistant, have five children.

Heinlen succeeds the Rev. Peter Leddy who left last August to become a district executive, based out of Oakland, Md.

NORTHSIDE CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 5110 Florist Road N.W., has scheduled a gospel concert Sunday at 11 a.m. Guest artist will be Harold Moore, a former singer with the Platters and Drifters group.

AT ROSALIND HILLS BAPTIST CHURCH, 2711 Laburnum Ave. S.W., The Echoes, a choir of 35 senior adults from Virginia Beach, will present a program of sacred music Monday at 7 p.m. A reception follows. Dixie Bollinger directs the choir, and singers belong to London Bridge Baptist Church.

AT CAVE SPRING UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, Janie Witmer has resigned as director of the children's choirs after serving since 1992. She will be succeeded in September by Sharon B. Capps who is active in St. James Episcopal Church.

CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 1101 Franklin Road S.W., has scheduled a program by its parish choir on Sunday at 5 p.m. The Garth Newel Chamber Players will join the singers for the free program, which includes the Mozart "Missa Brevis in F" and other works under the direction of Thomas Baugh.

BELMONT BAPTIST CHURCH has chosen Carol Frances McCann, a former Richmond nurse, as its next minister of education and youth. She succeeds Chris Rakestraw, who left nine months ago to continue his education at Radford University.

REVIVAL SERVICES are planned Sunday through May 26 at Fellowship Baptist Church, 929 Murray Ave. S.E. Guest evangelist will be the Rev. Ron Comfort, founder and president of Ambassador Bible College in Shelby, N.C. A revival preacher for the past 34 years, he is assisted by his wife, Joyce, and Larry Brubaker, as song leader. The team will lead worship at 10 and 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday and nightly at 7 through the week.

THE REV. RANDALL FLOYD, has begun his work as minister of youth and education at Bethel Baptist Church in Salem. Floyd, 28, comes from the staff of a Louisville, Ky. church. He is a graduate of Florida State University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary with degrees in music and Christian education.
