A BENEDICTINE MORNING RETREAT to enhance the spiritual life of Christians will be in progress Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at St. John's Episcopal Church, 801. S. Jefferson St. in downtown Roanoke. Admission is free, but registration is requested. To register, call 343-9341. The Rev. Thomas P. O'Dell, rector, will lead the retreat.
THE REV. ROY E. HEINLEN JR. will become pastor of Troutville Church of the Brethren on July 15. The pastor, 41, comes to the Roanoke Valley from Dawson, Pa., where he served a United Methodist congregation. In the ministry for 14 years, Heinlen has also served two other congregations and is a graduate of Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington. He and his wife, Candy Wolfe Heinlen, a certified medical assistant, have five children.
Heinlen succeeds the Rev. Peter Leddy who left last August to become a district executive, based out of Oakland, Md.
LOUISE BROOKS DENT, a member of First Baptist Church on North Jefferson Street since 1926, has been honored there as Church Mother. Dent, 94, is the church's oldest member and remains active in its Bible Band. She is the widow of John Henry Dent and the mother of a son and a daughter. At 90. Dent modeled for Essence magazine.
NORTHSIDE CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 5110 Florist Road N.W., has scheduled a gospel concert Sunday at 11 a.m. Guest artist will be Harold Moore, a former singer with the Platters and Drifters group.
THE WINGS OF FAITH, a gospel band, will perform Sunday at 7 p.m. at Preston Oaks Baptist Church, 102 Preston Ave. N.E. Admission is free.
AT CAVE SPRING UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, Janie Witmer has resigned as director of the children's choirs after three years of service. She will be succeeded in September by Sharon B. Capps who is active in St. James Episcopal Church.
A GOSPEL MUSIC PROGRAM is planned for Saturday at 7 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, 1601 Colorado St. in Salem. It will feature The Victors, Evelyn Conner, a Salem gospel singer, and Scott and Janice Pendergrass, a Ringgold, Ga., team. An offering will be taken.
