Staples, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Roanoke, averaged 11.9 points and 3.0 rebounds a game as a freshman for the Cavaliers this past season. He established a UVa record for 3-point field goals made in a season and set an ACC record for most 3-pointers by a freshman in a season with 103.
Kelvin Sampson of the University of Oklahoma is the head coach of the Junior World Championship team. Assistant coaches are Perry Clark of Tulane and Bill Herrion of Drexel.

Aaron Johnson, a former Glenvar standout, shot a 75 to tie for 10th place and Ferrum was 13th after one round of the NCAA Division III men's golf championship at Hulman Links Golf Course in Terre Haute, Ind. Tuesday's round was postponed because of thunderstorms.
Mark Paluszak shot a 68 to take the individual lead and pace Otterbein to first place in the team standings at 293. Methodist is second at 302, followed by California-San Diego at 309.
All four Dixie Conference entries are in the top 13. Christopher Newport is sixth at 312 and Greensboro is tied for ninth at 316.
Matt Jordan shot an 81 to tie for 53rd for Ferrum. Ed Alvarez and Brad Ruskin each shot an 83 to tie for 76th and R.J. Weaver carded an 84 to tie at 84th.
Phil Hopkins, a former assistant coach at Radford University and an assistant at Western Carolina the past two seasons, is the Catamounts' new head basketball coach.
Hopkins replaces Benny Dees, who resigned May 9 after two seasons as the coach at Western Carolina. Hopkins coached at Radford from 1985-88.
There will be an open practice for drivers in all divisions from 4 p.m. until dark today at New River Valley Speedway in Radford.
There will not be a practice Saturday before the big 250-lap Late Model Stock Car race Sunday because the track is the site for the second annual Special Interest Cars car and truck show from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Registration for the car show is from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday.
Sunday's race will begin at 3 p.m., with live television coverage by WDBJ-TV 7, Roanoke. Gates open 9 a.m. with practice at noon. Qualifying begins at 1:30 p.m. Other races on the card are a 50-lap event for the Mid-Atlantic Open Wheel Modifieds, 35 laps for the Limited Sportsmen and 25 for the Pure Stock.
